We have features on all our readerships interests ranging from property, food and drink, days out amongst many others. During our time as a printed and later as a dual format publication, it became clear that the media market place was evolving, as many newsgroups reported a drop in sales and circulation from their printed arms both locally and nationally, Colston Media took the decision to expand on the digital arm and stop the printed side. Since we took this decision, our readership has increased, our publication was made more accessible to our readership by being Smartphone, Laptop and Tablet friendly. Our advertisers have reported an increase in their already strong return on their adverts. This also importantly, presented value for money advertising.

Thousands of people ate, drank, danced and shopped at the fifth Maryport Taste of the Sea festival this weekend.

The event was the biggest yet – spread over two sites, right around the town’s historic waterfront. It used the new Harbourside event space, created as part of Cumberland Council’s £12 million regeneration projects, and the Marine Road showfield.

The festival also marked the official opening of the new event space, where international chef Jack Stein, son of TV star Rick Stein, and Cartmel’s Masterchef winner Irini Tzortzoglou, were both showcasing their skills. Elsewhere in the festival, there was a big Producers’ Market, packed with local food and drink, two stages for live entertainment, and a lively Rum Bar, run by the team from Maryport Round Table.

The team from Chelaris fishing boat were selling their catch, many traders, including the Oyster Bar, sold out twice, and the Teenage Market and TEG Retail stalls were also doing brisk trade.

Ten of Maryport’s brilliant businesses, many of which have benefited from shopfront grants as part of the Council’s regeneration work, also took part in a Postcard Trail featuring scenes from the past and promoting Maryport Maritime Museum ahead of its opening this Autumn.

None of this could happen without a massive team effort. The Taste Cumbria festivals are organised by Cumberland Council and Taste of the Sea’s major sponsor is Maryport Town Council. Thank you also to the other 2025 sponsors, Milburns Solicitors, Grants Oak Smoked, Thomas Armstrong Construction and Forth Engineering, and our supporters Maryport Business Group, Maryport Round Table and Maryport Harbour Authority.

Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:

“What a weekend! It is fantastic to see the Taste Cumbria events getting bigger and better and bringing millions of pounds into the local economy. Thank you to the people of Maryport for really getting behind Taste of the Sea and making us so welcome.

“The biggest vote of thanks has to go to our event team, volunteers, sponsors and supporters. Many months of work goes into staging these festivals and their dedication makes it all possible.”

Taste Cumbria is back in Cockermouth for the flagship festival on 27 and 28 September, then in Carlisle on 1 and 2 November, with the final event, a Christmas special, in Cockermouth on 6 and 7 December.

Save The Asian Elephants is a not for profit association of prominent professionals, experts and campaigners that informs public opinion on the brutal capture, beating, poaching and abuse for festivals and tourism of these wondrous but beleaguered creatures and the plunder of their habitat; and exerts influence on governments, politicians and the tourist industry to adopt solutions it advances.

Save The Asian Elephants works to end the terrible cruelty and brutal conditions suffered by this wondrous and ancient species. Intense though our feelings may be, Save The Asian Elephants is respectful of the culture and traditions of the countries with whom it engages.

Please help us to give the elephants a chance – whilst time remains.

MAJOR UPGRADE WILL HELP PREVENT FLOODING ON KEY AIRPORT ROUTE

Major improvements have now been completed on the A555 near Manchester Airport to reduce the risk of flooding and keep the road open during heavy rain.

Cheshire East Council has upgraded the pumping station that helps manage water levels on the Manchester Airport Eastern Link Road (A555), a key route connecting Stockport, Manchester Airport and surrounding areas.

This upgrade doubles the current pumping capability, which was limiting the station's ability to cope during storms. The work involved replacing the ageing control panel, which had clocked up more than 61,000 hours of use.

Councillor Mark Goldsmith, chair of Cheshire East Council’s highways and transport committee, said:

“We know how worrying and disruptive it can be for drivers when this road floods. This upgrade means the pumping station is now much more reliable and better equipped to deal with severe weather. It’s a big step forward in keeping this important road open and safe during the increasingly heavy downpours we are getting.”

The A555 has flooded several times in recent years, causing serious disruption and even leaving vehicles stranded. While no solution can completely eliminate the risk of flooding, this upgrade is a key step in improving the road’s resilience to heavy rain.

The council is continuing to explore further ways to strengthen flood prevention measures and ensure the road remains a safe and reliable route for all road users.
