Who said August was a quiet month??

People keep saying it slows down over the summer, but I’ve found myself extremely busy - and I’m not complaining in the slightest as this week has been full of exciting projects and connections.

I’m thrilled to be working with my dream clients. After focusing on who I serve best, I’ve landed a project doing crisis comms for a major Christian charity supporting people in developing countries - AND I’m quoting for another large Christian charity to help with press, comms, social media, and even exploring TikTok. It feels incredible to be doing work that aligns so closely with my experience and passions. Lots of people might find it odd but I really do love working on crisis comms - I know what to do from both a newsroom and press office side so it's truly within my comfort zone.

Beyond client work, I’ve been getting out and about:

I attended Socially Shared Womens Business Support Network in Rugby and met some incredible women and picked up ideas for my business. Thanks so much Karen Heap for hosting. I’ll also be talking all things TikTok at the October meeting, so I’m prepping for that too.

Had a long overdue catch up with Sue Crooks from LoveBiz Networking® UK Limited and we have something very exciting in the pipeline! 🤫

Thursday was the first time I'd headed to co working at West Midlands House and The Xchange (sorry it's taken me so long Jeni Sellick) The space is incredible and it was wonderful to have a co-worker for the day in Simon Gordon.

And there were little reminders to pause and reflect: twice this week people said, “I saw your TED Talk” and I can’t believe it’s already been a year! People are still talking about it and want to work with me because of it which is great!

I’m finishing the week by taking a proper weekend off, recharging, and enjoying a cheeky BBQ with my family.

This week has reminded me that success isn’t just about the work itself - it’s meaningful projects, great connections, time for yourself, and getting paid for what you love to do. What more could you ask for?

Did you know TikTok is a bigger search engine than Google?

That's right, more and more users are turning to it to find out how to do things, find information, discover products and connect with businesses they want to work with.

That means your ideal customers might not be Googling you - they could be searching for exactly what you offer on TikTok.

A lot of people still see it as an entertainment app, only for those who want to show their face on camera or dance to silly trends. But the truth is it's one of the biggest discovery platforms in the world and you are missing out by not being on it. The best part is - you actually don't have to show your face or use your voice to succeed on it. There are so many options when it comes to creating content that you can find a style that works for you.

Going from “I’ll help everyone” to “Here’s who I serve best” has helped me land my dream clients. And I feel like I manifested this?

When I had my Woman Who Awards interview earlier this year one of the questions I was asked in the interview was, "What would be the peak of your career?"

I knew the answer straight away. I said it would be supporting charities working in the Middle East. Gaza, Lebanon, Syria… If I could help amplify their voices, I’d feel like my business was truly on the right track. Having been a journalist for many years reporting on these stories, and heading to Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon in 2016 I knew this was where my skills were best placed.

Fast forward to now, I’ve just landed a dream project and I'm quoting for another one. I'm doing Crisis comms for a major Christian charity supporting people in developing countries. And I'm currently quoting for another large Christian charity to help support their press office, comms, and social media - including helping them explore TikTok. (There's also other exciting things going on in the background that I don't want to jinx yet!)

My skills and specialties are unique - and people NEED that specificity. When you specialise, your ideal clients find you. So a quick reintroduction in the hope that my ideal clients will see it;

I’m Emma, I work to support charities, CIC's, faith organisations and women led businesses with PR and Communications (including social media). I cover everything from press releases, social media, to media training and interview prep - but my two big specialties are:

I'm back in office! And not to be one of THOSE people that turns a holiday post into a business lesson but, that's exactly what I'm going to do!

Here's what my Egyptian holiday taught me about good PR and Crisis Comms planning (yes, really)

I’ve just returned from Egypt - I was meant to be ticking off bucket list moments: Exploring the Valley of the Kings, swimming in the sea, indulging in amazing food, and switching off properly for the first time in a while.

And I did… some of that. The trip into the Sahara to see a beautiful sunset and go stargazing was a particular highlight.

But I also spent a few days seriously unwell. The kind of ill that makes you question your life choices, I thought I may have needed to go to hospital at one point, and when I was doubled over in pain at 2am and cried at reception I thought it was all over and I'd need an early flight home.

When I raised it with staff, the response was consistent: “It’s the heat.”

Over and over again. No deviation. No admittance. And I’ll be honest - after a while, even I started to believe it.

Here’s the lesson:

Reputation management isn’t always about saying sorry — it’s about emotional response and consistency. They never apologised. But they also never left me to feel uncared for. Instead, they delivered exceptional service. Mint tea, water and Sprite appeared without asking. They checked in on me daily. They arranged extras, and offered discounts. And because of that… I won’t complain. I won’t leave a bad review. And I don’t even feel bitter.

That’s crisis comms done well:

- Stick to your story
- Deliver consistent messaging
- Pair it with genuinely thoughtful service
- Make people feel seen, heard, and looked after

Exceptional service can neutralise a bad experience - and that’s the real gem of great crisis comms.

The trip didn’t go entirely to plan, but once I reframed it as a wellness retreat (swimming, drinking lots of water and very plain food), it was still brilliant.
And I came home feeling refreshed - with a few PR reminders packed in my suitcase, too. Which is good because I've got an extremely busy month coming up and it's always good to have a refresher!

🌴 Out of Office 🌴

I’m officially out of office until 30th July – taking a well earned break and giving myself a belated 40th birthday present in the form of sun, adventure, and a little bit of escapism.

If you need me, I’ll be somewhere between walking through the Valley of the Kings pretending I’m an ancient Egyptian explorer or lying by the pool with a cocktail in hand, soaking up some well deserved rest. 🥂

As every self employed person knows… I might peek at my emails now and again, but I’m doing my best to switch off. So unless it's urgent then it can wait!

On that note - I’m fully booked for August, but there’s space in the diary come September – perfect timing if you’re planning something exciting for autumn.

Networking is definitely out of my comfort zone - but it's something I'm trying to do more of, in fact it's one of my "40 at 40" goals this year.

I’ve challenged myself to try 5 new networking sessions, and so far I’ve had a brilliant time and Socially Shared Womens Business Support Network, thanks to

Let’s be honest, networking is uncomfortable for everyone. You don’t want to sound too salesy, but you also don’t want to walk away feeling like you didn’t connect with anyone. And I’ll admit it… I’m not always great with the follow up. I never want to bother people. (I know I’m not alone in that!)

When people ask what I do, I tell them I run a PR and Comms agency. Yes, I do traditional PR -press releases for TV, radio, and newspapers - but also the not so traditional side of PR: social media, especially TikTok.

PR is really about storytelling. It's about getting your story in front of the right people - and that might be on the radio, or it might be on TikTok.

People's ears always prick up when I mention TikTok. There's still this misconception that it’s for kids and silly videos. But TikTok has overtaken Google as the most used search engine — and businesses are using it to scale massively. (Just look at P. Louise or Spudman!)

🚨🚨 SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGERS ARE NOT £25 A WEEK 🚨🚨

I saw a post recently where someone was asked to manage social media for £200 a month - and I thought that was cheeky. Then I found this actual request in my inbox that nearly made me swallow my own laptop:

“Looking for someone to manage our social media and create content 2–3 times a week. Budget is £25 per week.”

Sorry, WHAT?

I understand people may not have the budget when they are starting out, but if you want to grow then you have to invest and £25 is NOT it.

For £25 a week, I can offer you:

A nice chat
Maybe a meme?
Possibly a passive aggressive post about your budget

But full social media management AND content creation? That’s at least a day's work a week. My rate for that starts at £750 a month - and that’s before we even talk about strategy, content creation, captions, engagement, hashtags, and trying to beat the algorithm gods into submission.
I'm not even one of the expensive ones! I intentionally keep my prices accessible to support amazing causes, charities and women led businesses. But I still value my time, experience and skillset - and you should too.

Let’s stop undervaluing social media as a PR strategy, digital marketing and communications. If you want someone to grow your audience, boost visibility and create content that connects - it takes more than a fiver and a Canva login.

The first thing people say when I mention TikTok?
“Oh, so we’re doing dances now?”

And every time, it drives me nuts. Because for me, TikTok was never about that.

I joined when I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, searching for answers I couldn’t find anywhere else. My Doctor said “Just don’t eat gluten” and sent me on my way and at that point I had no idea where to turn. But eventually I found answers (on TikTok) - through real people sharing their stories, their struggles, and their solutions.

I’ve seen TikTok do so much more than entertain. I’ve watched small businesses grow to sold out launches.
I’ve seen people open up conversations about difficult, life changing topics.
I’ve grown my own PR agency through TikTok and had business leads from it.

So when people say “Oh group dance!” It really annoys me!

Last month, I was at a religion media conference in London and CNN reporter for the Vatican talked about the power of TikTok with the recent papal announcements. My ears pricked up. He talked about how they were still catering to those looking at mainstream media, but they had started posting on TikTok with reach of about 80 million. I had a conversation with him after his panel and honestly I felt so validated. For years I have been saying how important TikTok is for reaching a wider audience - and now here was a journalist from a major news organisation, talking about one of the biggest religious events of the year being on TikTok and he was reiterating my point.

I hope this will change perceptions. And one day when I talk about TikTok I would like the first thing said to me not to be “Oh are we doing are dance?” 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’ve spent years working in PR, comms and social media, and what I’ve learned is that most people have something brilliant to share… they just need a bit of help getting seen.

I joined TikTok during the pandemic, mostly out of curiosity and I’ve watched it evolve into one of the most powerful tools for visibility, community and brand growth. Despite that, a lot of people still don’t take it seriously.

But the truth is, TikTok isn’t just for Gen Z or big brands with big content budgets. It’s an incredible space to connect with your audience in a way that feels real and human.
