It’s coming to the time where estate agents will be pressuring students into securing their uni house, you may have already encountered one, or perhaps others have told you that if you don’t get a house soon, there will be none left before you need to move in. This is simply not true. It is currently October 2021, and the new school year doesn’t begin until September 2022, which is almost a year in the future, so there’s no rush!

Students are often pressured into contracts that leave them susceptible to issues during their tenancy, including rat infestations, broken furniture, faulty heating and unfair costs from greedy landlords. Due to a lack of awareness surrounding housing rights for young people, students are left in the dark when it comes to signing tenancy agreements, so here are some dos and don’ts that can help protect you and inform you of some of your basic housing rights!

Check the article on our website, and look out for leaflets appearing soon…

This year, we are hoping to centre Black voices in our second issue of our Black History Month Magazine.

Until the 31st of October, we will be accepting and publishing articles and artwork that focus on Black history and issues.

The theme for BHM 2021 is Proud To Be, so we would particularly be interested in articles that celebrate different Black identities, achievements and contributions.

If you’re interested, you can contribute,

Opinion pieces
Personal essays
Lifestyle essays
Political writing
Art & photography

Or alternatively, we are looking for quotes from Black students that resonate with the theme, Proud to Be.

At the end of the month, all submitted articles will be available both online and in print. There is the option of donating to the Reach Out Project, a mentoring programme to support young Black boys from inner-city London.

If you want to get involved, you can email:

🚨🎯🚨

We want to contribute to the great tradition of Black History Month as we understand its importance and immediacy.

From now until the 26th of Ocotber, we will be accepting and publishing articles and artwork relevant to Black History Month and make sure UOB students from all backgrounds are enriched in this fantastic tradition.

At the end of Black History Month we will publish all your work in a print issue which you can buy! All money made off of this print issue will go to the Black Curriculum, a charity endorsed by BLM that looks to promote Black British History.

As always, if you want to send us art or written work to go onto our website and the print issue, send your work to:

[email protected]
