Wasp phobia mum hack 🐝

Brilliant idea from Sarah (posted with permission)

‘If, like me, you have a child who suffers terribly in the summer because of her wasp phobia, I cannot begin to tell you what a life saver this was today at a local festival.

We could put her in it to eat (picnics have become a HUGE no-no for us) and give her somewhere to just breathe when the wasps got too much for her.

It’s actually a mosquito net for a bed but worked brilliantly. Easy up, easy down, light to transport and had the added bonus of not getting too hot as the breeze came through beautifully.

If anyone else has a wasp - avoiding tips I would be happy to hear them!’

Fairy Tales, Flying Carpets & Full-On Wow – VR Just Got Epic at the NEC

Universum - Birmingham opened last week and I got to take my 12 & 14 year old along for a preview. It was our first experience of VR so we had no idea really what to expect. Usually I'd be able to share lots of photos to give you a feel but it all goes on behind the headset!

There are three immersive virtual reality experiences and we checked out out two of them.

🌍 First up, Wild Immersion – a full 360° safari where elephants literally wander past your knees. You sit on swivel chairs for this one it's like stepping into a nature documentary. One minute you're soaring above the savannah and the next you're on the beach as baby turtles race past you to get to the sea. It was really good but the resolution wasn't as sharp as I was expecting (could be because I was wearing glasses)

🧙‍♀️ But the star of the show? FAIRY TALES. OMG. Think magic carpets, sparkly portals, floating jellyfish that you can push out the way (yes really), and a cinematic storybook quest that left all three of us – including two usually unimpressed teens – totally speechless.

It's immersive, interactive and seriously next-level – like Disney met the Matrix and sprinkled it with VR stardust. 🎇

This experience has you literally walking through magical worlds and once the headset is on you totally forget you're actually in a relatively small space. I was even bracing myself as Aladdin's magic carpet took off and holding on to my son while we were on a moving platform in a library which felt very Harry Potter like!

If it's a bit of a journey to get to then this is the one I would highly recommend. Napolean had been delayed as we were there a day before opening so we didn't get to check that one out but I think it would have the same interactive and immersive feel as the Fairy Tales.

HATTON ADVENTURE WORLD
Animals, Action, Adventure - a packed family day out

☀️☂️ Don't worry if the weather is all over the place, there's plenty indoors & out. We started at the soft play (mostly as I wanted to grab a cuppa but once my boys got going on the slides I thought I might not get them out. 🛝 They're awesome and while they were flying down the drop slides, the speedy wavy slide was as brave as I got.

There's absolutely loads packed at Hatton Adventure World in and lots for all ages - sandpit fossil dig, play parks, outdoor games, ride ones for little ones, fairground rides, bouncy slide, sheep racing, falconry displays and more. Love that my older two boys still wanted to go on the teacup ride! ☕

🔫 🪖The laser combat was great fun and meant the day out worked equally well for my youngest as well as 11 & 13 year old. It got quite competitve!

🐇Lots of animals to meet indoors too and of course we had a cuddle with a guinea pig and stroked the big fluffy rabbits.

Silverstone Museum is a great choice for a rainy day.

My boys love cars but me ... not so much so I was taken aback by how much I enjoyed it too.

It's a really high quality museum and totally child friendly with lots of hands on exhibits throughout.

Silverstone had originally been an RAF base and there's some great history around the second world war with a link trainer (learn to be a pilot), bomber training and turret training.

A big highlight for my 10 and 12 year old was the racing car simulator (booked as an extra). It goes way beyond any computer game with the chair & steering wheel juddering if they came off the track.

There's a great section where you get to be the engineer and develop your own winning motorcycle all on an interactive screen too.

Of course, there are the amazing glossy racing cars too. Your visit really does take you on a journey through the past, present and future of Silverstone and British motor racing.
