Right… gather round, it’s time for Tick Season: The Uninvited Chaos Goblins Edition (Now With Extraction Instructions Nobody Asked For But Everyone Needs) 🕷️🐾
From March through October, the UK turns into a soft-focus paradise… and also a full-time snack bar for ticks. Peak season is April to July — when it’s warm, a bit damp, and basically “all-you-can-attach” conditions in long grass, woodland, and anywhere vaguely outdoorsy.
And don’t be fooled by winter either… mild UK weather means these little freeloaders don’t fully disappear. They just go into part-time villain mode.
🌿 Where they’re lurking like tiny gremlins:
Woodlands 🌳
Moorlands 🌾
Long grass (aka dog Disneyland)
Parks
Anywhere deer have briefly considered existing
If your dog is having the time of their life… ticks probably are too.
⚠️ Why we care (beyond the general ick):
Ticks are tiny — like “is that dirt or danger?” tiny.
Some can carry illnesses like Lyme disease, so they’re not just annoying… they’re stealth-level passengers with bad intentions.
🧭 How to stay one step ahead of the chaos:
Use insect repellent before heading out, you can buy a natural repellent at Canine Country Kitchen & Cafe
Cover up where possible (yes, socks over trousers is still a look… well it is when it comes to ticks)
Stick to paths when your curiosity isn’t stronger than your survival instincts
Check yourself, kids, and dogs after every walk — full inspection mode activated
Pets especially… they will absolutely volunteer as tribute in long grass
If you find one, remove it properly and quickly
🕷️ Tick removal (aka: do it properly or don’t do it at all)
To remove a tick, use tick remover tool or fine-tipped tweezers if you don't have one, to grasp it as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure. Do not twist or squeeze the tick, as this can cause the mouthparts to break off or increase infection risk. Clean the area with soap and water or antiseptic after removal.
🧷 Final warning from the chaos frontline:
They can be the size of a poppy seed. Which means yes — you can walk through a field of pure joy and come home hosting something you absolutely did not invite.
So go on, enjoy the walks, embrace the Barkin’ Mad adventures… just maybe don’t bring home a tiny vampire as a souvenir 😅
