Today marks the start of the national Winter of Action—a major effort bringing police, councils, local retailers and communities together to keep people safe in town centres throughout December and January.

The campaign follows this summer’s Safer Streets work, which saw 16,000+ arrests and fines and a drop in anti-social behaviour across the country. With Christmas crowds growing, police will be using hotspot patrols and fast, visible action to protect shoppers and retail workers.

A major part of the winter plan is the launch of HEX zones—small, targeted hotspots where knife crime is most concentrated. London is among the cities piloting this approach, focusing on hyperlocal problem-solving and prevention.

At Fighting Knife Crime London we strongly support this focus on evidence-led policing, community partnership and youth intervention. Safer streets mean stronger communities—and fewer families affected by violence.

Honoured to attend the conference on Thursday.

*Over 52.6% of UK homicides are caused by kitchen knives, but
*only 3.6% by so-called Zombie knives.

Banning pointed kitchen knives except for special groups will undoubtedly save life.

Last night FKCL was really proud to partner with Trafalgar Theatre to help produce Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the West End with some brilliant young actors, many affected by knife crime. This opportunity is something they will never forget. This modern and often realistic take on such a visceral tragedy had strong resonance to the reality of too many young lives in the inner cities, and delivered a powerful preventative message.

Record number of knives taken off streets as knife murders plummet by almost 20%

• Almost 60,000 knives seized or surrendered under this government, protecting young lives and making our streets safe.
• Figures come as knife homicides down by 18% in a year.
• Knife seizures and surrender schemes introduced as part of the government’s mission to half knife crime within a decade, and the Plan for Change.

All of you working in the sector of child and youth empowerment and the NHS can take some credit here as well. There is so much more we must all do. It really does save lives. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eHDhuCMn Home Office

This is great news overall, but in London improvements still lag behind all but one other regions. We know there are multiple reasons for this but we do still need to redouble our efforts. Some real analysis to explain this is still required. The West Midlands has acheived a 30% reduction but London only 5%. That’s a big difference. The figures in London for reduced homicides of young people is more encouraging , but one death is still too many. The Ben Kinsella Trust London's Violence Reduction Unit London Youth Home Office
