Today marks the start of the national Winter of Action—a major effort bringing police, councils, local retailers and communities together to keep people safe in town centres throughout December and January.
The campaign follows this summer’s Safer Streets work, which saw 16,000+ arrests and fines and a drop in anti-social behaviour across the country. With Christmas crowds growing, police will be using hotspot patrols and fast, visible action to protect shoppers and retail workers.
A major part of the winter plan is the launch of HEX zones—small, targeted hotspots where knife crime is most concentrated. London is among the cities piloting this approach, focusing on hyperlocal problem-solving and prevention.
At Fighting Knife Crime London we strongly support this focus on evidence-led policing, community partnership and youth intervention. Safer streets mean stronger communities—and fewer families affected by violence.
