from 1st-7th august, we’re celebrating world breastfeeding week 💛
the theme this year ~ “create sustainable support systems” ~ addresses the pressing need to build lasting, equitable support for people who breastfeed – both at work, and in the healthcare system.
in the uk, 8 out of 10 mothers stop breastfeeding before they want to due to lack of support.
despite the UK discrimination act of 2011, which states it is unlawful to dismiss or discriminate against someone because they are breastfeeding, it’s still a taboo.
the uk has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world, and those who live in more deprived areas are more likely to go without support, and stop breastfeeding early.
but why?
breastfeeding is a completely natural thing, with countless benefits for the baby and the parent. not only can it help your mental health, wellbeing, and strengthen the bond with your baby, research has shown that breast milk has nutrients that help with healthy brain development too, giving your baby a better chance against childhood illnesses. 🍼
to us, it seems frankly ridiculous that someone can be made to feel ashamed for breastfeeding.
much like it is inherently wrong to judge a mother who can’t, or chooses not to, breastfeed.
however, research suggests that many women feel uncomfortable juggling breastfeeding while working – with many stopping after returning to work because of concerns about what their colleagues may think.
in fact, returning to the workplace is one of the most common reasons for terminating breastfeeding, with only 25% of women continuing after coming back to work (NIH).
so this week, we’re encouraging those in our community to help us break the stigma around breastfeeding.
whether that’s…
💛 providing reassurance and comfort to people who breastfeed
💛 creating spaces, either public or private, to breastfeed comfortably
💛 challenging people who discriminate or look down on breastfeeding in public
💛 sharing information and research about breastfeeding, and emphasising its natural process
the more we talk about it, especially in public spaces, the more normalised it will be 💛
