With Aer Lingus now having closed its Manchester transatlantic base, this one feels a little different looking back.

Aer Lingus operated its final Manchester long-haul services at the end of March 2026, bringing to an end almost five years of direct transatlantic flying from the airport. Flights between Manchester and Ireland continue, but the sight of an Aer Lingus widebody at MAN has become a lot less common.

One from the archives here. I’ll definitely miss seeing these around Manchester.

Found some old footage of OO-SNB “Rackham” tucked away in the archives.

Brussels Airlines gave this Airbus A320 its brilliant Tintin livery back in 2015, inspired by the shark submarine from Red Rackham’s Treasure. Even the cabin carried Tintin artwork.

One of those special liveries that was impossible to miss.

Virgin Atlantic’s “Uptown Girl” at Manchester.

This is G-VNYC, an Airbus A330-343 that joined Virgin Atlantic in 2012. The aircraft carried the name “Uptown Girl” and formed part of Virgin’s long-haul A330 fleet.

There was nothing quite like a Virgin Atlantic 747 at Manchester.

Taken back in 2019, this Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400 powers along a wet runway at Manchester, throwing up plenty of spray behind it.

The 747 was such a familiar sight here for many years, and looking back through these older photos really brings home how much the airport has changed.

Today feels like a good day to dig a few more Queens of the Skies out of the archives.

TUI’s “Montego Bay” looking superb at Manchester.

This is Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner G-TUIF, one of the aircraft in TUI Airways’ long-haul fleet. Delivered in 2014 and powered by General Electric GE engines, the 787 is instantly recognisable for its distinctive swept wings and modern, efficient design.

G-TUIF carries the name “Montego Bay” and remains a striking sight whenever it passes through Manchester.

A6-EVF is an Emirates Airbus A380-842, delivered in December 2018. It’s powered by four Rolls-Royce Trent 900-series engines.
