No swimming? Yes, swimming actually! 🏊
One of my favourite parts of running the is hearing people’s swim suggestions, so I can discover and share spots I didn’t know about before. This is a spot submitted by one of our early sign-ups — it just so happened we had a free day afterwards so we jumped straight in the car, I felt like a proper lido jetsetter 😅
Contrary to what the sign says, this is a public swim spot and you can book sessions — it’s near Leicester. It’s an old spring-fed quarry, so the water is crystal clear and a cool 10°C. It’s also known as the UK National Dive Centre, as people have been diving here since the ‘60s.
There are no loops and you’re literally sharing the water with the divers, and a tonne of stuff they’ve sunk for diving habitats. This includes a plane, a bus, a wooden boat, a Land Rover , and a bell. As swimmers, you can’t see any of it, but it’s cool to know it’s down there.
Entry was £10, but if you’re local you can sign up for a membership to bring that cost down to £6. This is definitely a spot for experienced outdoor swimmers only; there wasn’t a lifeguard or a system to check you in and out of the water, and you’re out of your depth immediately — which makes sense, as it’s for diving! I was also slightly aggrieved at the 20p for a shower.
All in all though, this is a beautiful spot — and it felt pretty special to be sharing it with fishes, buses, and divers. The opening hours are extensive and it’s well worth a visit.
