This enticing haven in North Devon was created by interior designer Katharine Pooley as a tranquil, comfortable retreat for nature-focused holidays with her outdoors-loving family.

“There are luxurious, original elements reflecting my design sensibilities, but peace and comfort were the ultimate goal. With two high-energy boys and a cluster of dogs, durability was key and – as the property is available for rental – comfort and functionality were a primary concern."

For Katherine's practical tips on creating your seaside interiors, see the full interview in our current issue.

Art inspired by nature’s quiet drama 🌱

This summer, David Harber unveiled two extraordinary new sculptures, each a tribute to the beauty, movement and form found in the natural world.

The first is Rush, which made its debut at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. With 78 mirror-polished stainless-steel rods at its core, cradled by verdigris bronze sheaths lined in hand-painted 24-carat gold leaf, it captures the delicate rhythm of reeds beside a Portuguese lake. “The subtle interplay of reeds and their cellulose structures started to fascinate me,” says Design Director Lior Kristal.

The second is FLO, a captivating sculpture that unfolds and shifts as you move around it. With a central through-hole offering a changing view of the landscape beyond, FLO is designed to connect the viewer with their surroundings in a moment of stillness.

Both pieces showcase David Harber’s signature blend of exquisite craftsmanship and a deep respect for the outdoors, creating spaces where art and nature meet.

The launch of Wildflower Live saw readers enjoy a photographic masterclass from Clive Nichols, a delicious organic lunch and a healthy dose of spring sunshine.

Back in April, we were delighted to host the first workshop in our Wildflower Live series of events. It took place at the beautiful Ashby Manor in Northamptonshire, where readers gathered to enjoy a flower photography masterclass with celebrated photographer Clive Nichols.

Blessed with glorious spring sunshine, our guests spent time outside in the stunning walled garden photographing tulips, before heading indoors to feast on a delicious organic lunch. Everyone took home a copy of Wildflower and a goodie bag full of beauty treats from our friends at 100 Acres.

Make sure you’re following Wildflower and Wildflower Live for more fabulous reader events coming soon.

We love this combination of fiery strawflowers paired with silvery-white eryngiums against a backdrop of poppy seed heads and country garden staple verbena bonariensis. The bold reds really pop against the cooler colours, and the wildlife - especially the bees - really love it. What do you think of this colourful combo?

Designing your dream outdoor dining space?

We’ve teamed up with the experts at Holland Green to share three simple but transformative tips for creating an alfresco setting that’s as functional as it is beautiful...

From positioning your table for sun-dappled lunches, to curating the atmosphere with thoughtful textures and materials, a little planning goes a long way.

1 - Location is Key

Choose a spot that balances sun and shade. Ideally under a pergola or pavilion to offer shelter from summer heat or cooler weather. Positioning near the kitchen ensures ease and flow, while avoiding overhanging trees helps maintain a clean, low-maintenance space.

2 - Design for Space & Flow

Think practically: how many will gather here? Ensure your furniture suits the scale, with room to move comfortably around it. Avoid tucking the area into a corner - instead, create an open, welcoming zone with a natural connection to the rest of the garden. If level changes are involved, make the journey feel intentional and inviting.

3 - Consider the Atmosphere

Do you envision relaxed alfresco brunches or more formal evening gatherings? Whether it’s built-in banquettes or flexible loose furniture, comfort and style go hand in hand. Materials, textures and the surrounding setting — from open meadows to shaded courtyards — all contribute to the mood you’re crafting.

Whether you're envisioning relaxed brunches beneath the pergola or evening gatherings under soft garden lighting, these expert ideas will help you shape a space that feels both considered and effortlessly inviting.

Follow our friends at Holland Green at HollandGreen Architecture, Interiors & Landscapes and please tag them in your own garden dining moments! We'd love to see how you’re bringing your outdoor spaces to life.
