Sure, it wouldn't be the summer holidays without the weather having spent itself out entirely a month ago, leaving us crumb-ettes of measly sunshine in-between dark clouds and showers. Typical. Still, look on the bright side, with all the time spent indoors you can catch up with all the local news and events going on with the August Box River News!
This month's issue has a bit of a different look and is a goliath weighing in at a beefy 64 pages. Bonus points for photos of readers holding it in far-flung exotic locations (e.g. Frinton)!

July brings a portentious date around on the calendar - 15th July, St. Swithin's Day.
Legend has it that whatever the weather is on St Swithin's Day, that same weather will hold for the following 40 days. It is attributed to St. Swithin (or 'Swithun') because when he died he requested his body be left outside for the "sweet rain of heaven" to fall on his body, which is very poetic, but, after a year of his being dead the locals presumably got fed up of the flies so they moved his body into a shrine inside the cathedral and a massive storm broke out which townsfolk believed was the result of his extreme moody disapproval at the interment.
St. Swithin also has a miracle attributed to him of when a lady crossing a bridge dropped her basket of eggs by accident. The eggs all smashed on the cobbles, causing her much drama-queen anguish. Possibly sensing an opportunity for a free omelette, St. Swithin stooped to pick up her basket and handed it back to the grief-stricken lady with all the eggs magically intact, total Paul Daniels style. Amazing! Do it again!

Look, there's normally a lot going on in the Box River Benefice - it's that kind of place, people like doing stuff round these parts. But seriously, this June must be a bit of a record-breaker for the dazzling number of events planned for the month. There's something for everyone - dog shows, fashions shows, live music, open gardens, art exhibitions, film nights, history talks, village fetes, barn dances, and last but definitely not least, Father Rob's very last service for the benefice before he and his family leave for pastures new. Talk about a packed diary! "Ne'er cast a clout, till May is out." - so says the time-old proverb. You may be surprised however to learn that a 'clout' is an old-fashioned word for a piece of clothing, so essentially it's saying "Don't strip off outside until June as you'll catch your death, you silly bu**er". I think we can all agree that is sage advice indeed, yet it sharply contradicts with the concept of World N**e Gardening Day which is on the first weekend in May?! Traditionally April is the tricksters' month when all the 'hilarious' pranks are played on April 1st. Notable examples in history are when the BBC tried to convince everyone that spaghetti grew on trees, when they announced that the natural history team had discovered a species of penguin that could fly, or when Tesco announced they were selling carrots grown with holes so that they would whistle when cooked. Oh, how we laughed.
You'll find no such falsehoods in this month's Box River News, no sir! Just the actual facts of the smorgasbord of events and news happening in the benefice this month. What's this? Sunset.. after 5pm? Some light? Some warmth? Surely some trickery? I thought the world had been plunged into eternal darkness by some malevolent sorcery. Not so! Important news! Our dedicated archive researchers have unearthed news that the Anglo Saxons used to call February 'Sol-monath', the translation for which is 'cake month'. CAKE MONTH! Despite its awful weather, February might now be my favourite month of the year! Apparently the anglo-saxons used to offer their cakes to the gods, but we can gloss over that bit I'm sure.

As you boys and girls have all been super good this year here's an early Christmas present for you. The January 2025 issue of the Box River News is here! Just like the Pacific atoll of Christmas Island, New Year always comes to the BRN before the rest of the world. Go figure.
Anyway, thank you to all of our readership across South Suffolk this year for your amazing comments and contributions. Let's hope 2025 is a fantastic year that brings some much-needed peace and prosperity to all.

October! The month permanently at odds with itself after being named as the eighth month of the year only for Julius Caesar to ruin it all by moving January and February to the front of the calendar to make it the tenth month instead. Those pesky latin so-and-so's, couldn't leave anything alone, could they?
