NEW ON RED PEPPER: Cuba stands firm 🇨🇺

“Cuba’s only threat to the United States is as a good example,” writes Helen Yaffe .yaffe , professor of Latin American political economy at the University of Glasgow and cohost of the Cuba Analysis podcast.

US government warmongering has reached a fever pitch unseen since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis when officials urged President Kennedy to invade or ‘nuke’ the island.

As the US oil siege continues to have devastating effects on every sector in Cuba, Yaffe reflects on the country’s response to ongoing psychological warfare.

“Cuba’s best form of resistance has been not just the assertion of national sovereignty, but the creation of an alternative model of development that places human welfare and environmental concerns at its core.”

NEW ON RED PEPPER: Deviants & trailblazers - review 📖 by

“It takes a lot of time to understand defeat,” writes historian, heritage facilitator and educator Kit Heyam.

In a contemporary context where the trans community is often siloed into sometimes opposing political positions, ’s newly published ‘Deviants and trailblazers: A History of Trans Activism in Britain’ is a timely resource for contemporary activists.

NEW ON RED PEPPER: Chloe Slater and the politics of young Britain 🇬🇧

’s songs are addictive and self assured. But what sets her apart from other young songwriters is hinted, first, in her songs’ titles.

There is Death Trap (a critique of rental housing), Nothing Shines on This Island (exploring British class inequality), and War Crimes (lambasting government complicity in the Gaza genocide).

To put it simply, Slater writes political songs. Protest songs. “To understand the appeal of this genre is to understand the politics of young Britain today,” writes John Newsham

In our latest Issue #248 Striking back, the author argues that political messaging, generational tensions and deepening class conflict are fuelling the 22-year-old’s popularity.

NEW ON RED PEPPER: On the radical politics of sobriety 🍸

While addiction in the UK remains stigmatised as an individual failing, recognising its structural underpinnings opens up routes towards a liberatory framing of society.

“Addiction doesn’t sit outside politics. It’s shaped by political conditions, narrated through political frameworks, and made to serve political ends,” writes British-Jamaican writer William Rayfet Hunter

“Suspicion toward sobriety on the left often draws on its association with discipline and neo-liberal respectability. Those associations remain real, but they do not exhaust what sobriety can mean.”

Red Pepper Media takes Chesterfield May Day Gala! 🌶️

For once, marking May Day on Bank Holiday Monday, rather than the first of the month, made perfect sense. May 4, 2026 marked 100 years since workers led the only General Strike this country has seen... to date. Celebrating the beating heart of our recent annual print edition in Chesterfield offered us the opportunity to connect with long-time subscribers, new readers and the broader public.

Locals, browsing political organisations stalls in the market square, expressed anger over housing, rising energy costs, government misspending and stalled promises on nationalisation. A packed hall welcomed Callum Cant and Matthew Lee, in conversation with RPM editor Darcy White, to discuss the political manoeuvring behind the General Strike. One attendee recalled her dad telling her stories about his experiences on the picket lines. Others debated potential for mass industrial action today.

The venue was the new Rose Hill Arts Centre, repurposed for community-led events. Just metres away, we passed a private housing development draped in flags and adverts for Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain Party. A passerby told me it was owned by a multi-millionaire. The juxtaposition felt stark, but reflects Britain today: people angry with capitalism, open to radical ideas, offered giant flags over meaningful change.

Chesterfield Council did not have seats up for election this year, but will soon. Community-centred events are essential for the future to look left. Rest assured, RMP will keep organising to that end.
