The PPG Wave 2.3, produced by Palm Products GmbH from 1984 to 1987, is a digital/analog hybrid synthesizer that built on its predecessors, the Wave 2 and 2.2.

The 2.3 features 16 oscillators (two per voice), 12-bit resolution for samples via the Waveterm B (otherwise 8-bit), and 8-part multitimbrality. Its key features include wavetable synthesis with over 2,000 single-cycle waveforms, analog SSM2044 VCFs and Curtis 3360 VCAs for warm, dynamic sounds, an 8-track sequencer with real-time parameter automation, and MIDI integration added in 1984.

The Waveterm B, is an upgraded companion computer with 5.25-inch floppy drives, that enables sampling, wavetable creation, and sequencing, making it a powerful creative tool.

Famous users include Depeche Mode, Tangerine Dream, Thomas Dolby, and The Fixx, with iconic tracks like Depeche Mode’s “See You” (shimmering pads), Tangerine Dream’s “Love on a Real Train” (ethereal textures), Thomas Dolby’s “Windpower” (bassline), and The Fixx’s “Deeper and Deeper” (pulsing bass). Tangerine Dream’s collaboration with PPG founder Wolfgang Palm, influenced the addition of analog filters, significantly shaping the Wave series’ evolution and sound.

The ARP Odyssey Rev 1, introduced in 1972 is duophonic analog synthesizer designed to compete with the Minimoog.

Manufactured from 1972 to 1975, the Rev 1 features a white-faced panel and a 2-pole 4023 filter, giving it a bright, aggressive sound. It features two VCOs (sawtooth, square, pulse, PWM), a resonant low-pass filter, a high-pass filter, ADSR/AR envelopes, a sine/square LFO, sample-and-hold, oscillator sync, and a ring modulator. Unique features were its aggressive oscillators and innovative keyboard-scanning system.

It’s estimated 3,000 Odyssey units were produced across all models, with Rev 1 being the rarest. The Rev 1’s 4012 filter, similar to Moog’s design, led to legal issues, which lead to ARP replacing it with the 4035 filter in later models.

Famous tracks using the Arp Odyssey include ‘Don’t you want me’ - Human League, ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’ - ABBA, ‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric?’ - Gary Numan, ‘Mysterons’ - Portishead, ‘Oxygene Pt.4’ - Jean-Michel Jarre, ‘Sweet Sticky Thing’ - Ohio Players, ‘Body Heat’ - Quincy Jones, ‘Rocket Man’ - Elton John, ‘The Hand That Feeds’ - NIN, ‘Nespole’ - Floating Points ‘Thousand Knives’ - Yellow Magic Orchestra etc

The 002 is a 12-voice analog-digital hybrid synthesizer, introduced 2014 and produced until 2020.

It was Modals flagship instrument and featured a premium FATAR semi-weighted five-octave keybed with aftertouch, two numerically controlled oscillators (NCOs) per voice plus two sub-oscillators, and a 24dB per octave four-pole transistor ladder filter with unique “polesweeping” for morphing between filter types.

Its hybrid architecture has over 50 waveforms, from classic analog to digital shapes, and included a 12-track, 32-step sequencer, a versatile arpeggiator with “hold” mode, and the Animator for sequencing any parameter.

The Modal 002 has a rich, warm sound and you can see its influence on later models like the Argon8, which inherited its wavetable DNA.

Famous users include Calvin Harris, Eric Prydz, Ju**ie XL and JJ Abrams.
