'My name, Tumukunde, means you're gonna love her'.

Turns out she's right. Tumi (that's her nickname) is 15, she's a member of Bolton Lads and Girls Club and has brought so much energy, joy and happiness to this week's Onside takeover of the The Big Issue

Her article on her experiences of being a refugee has rightly been at the top of the Big Issue homepage all week, as well as making a beautifully designed two-page spread in the print magazine.

Like all the young people from OnSide's Youth Advisory Board who we've worked with on this project over the past two months, Tumi's confidence and curiosity shine through, and she was eager to share her experiences of moving to Bolton from DRC when she was just four years old.

Attending 'Lads' (as she calls ) has been key to her making friends, discovering her passions for dance and basketball, and embracing new experiences - like this week's incredible Big Issue takeover.

Buy the Big Issue this week (from a vendor, a shop or online) or read Tumi's article online (linked below). Either way, you're gonna love it.

Tumukunde Uzomukunde became a refugee when her family left the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo when she was just four.

What’s the big question everyone is desperate to ask Angus Collins?
Zoe Hardman asked THAT question when she interviewed Britain’s bravest rower on the Heart Radio breakfast show with Jamie Theakston.
Angus sets off on his solo and unsupported row around our beautiful shores within the week.
Follow his Insta account at AngusCollinsbe for updates.
And please donate to James’s Place, helping men in suicidal crisis.

The Government plans to ditch Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) for hundreds of thousand of children with additional needs, according to reports.
Anna Bird and Katie Ghose from our client the Disabled Children's Partnership were quoted in The Times and Guardian.
You can also listen back to Katie, Chief Executive of Kids and vice chair of the DCP, on Stephen Nolan's BBC Radio 5 show explaining how harmful ditching EHCPs will be. Katie also calls on Government to talk to parents and DCP organisations to understand how change doesn't have to be catastrophic. (From 1.05)

A week's work?

Nope, this coverage for our clients has not only taken months of work from our excellent team, it shows our experience and strength and breadth of relationships with journalists, built over years.

Sunday:

⭐ The Observer runs a page feature on the powerful work being done at OnSide's The Way Youth Zone positively empowering young men. (MSN and Radio 4's Broadcasting House pick up the story) Thanks to Cause's latest signing Teresa Parker.

⭐FYI Investigates Disability And Me wins a BAFTA. The Sky News show giving voice to disabled young people that we collaborated on with Fresh Start Media was one of the highlights of 2024 for Cause.

Tuesday:

⭐ The Sun devotes a beautifully-designed graphic and spread to record-smashing rower and mental health advocate Angus Collins. Also runs online.

⭐ The Mirror runs a news exclusive on our client One Home's investigation into the failure of the Government's Property Flood Resilience Grant. (The story is picked up by MSN and quotes Angela Terry). Meticulous work by Cause data guru Aimi Jones

⭐ BBC's The One Show features an item about OnSide's latest Youth Zone in Salford. Our Jenna Sloan was on hand to support filming.

Wednesday: Our Sam Carlisle was invited to meet the King with Sammy's Foundation founder Patricia Alban, Patricia's story was picked up in The Daily Mail.

Thursday:

⭐ The Sun and The i quote the Disabled Children's Partnership reaction to the story that the Government is scrapping education, health and care plans for children with SEND.

Saturday:

⭐ Jamie's Farm is included in a Guardian Magazine feature about swapping office life for working outdoors.

Thanks to the journalists that collaborated with us and to our remarkable charity clients. We'll keep working hard for you.

No better way to mark Mental Health Awareness Week than with a double-page spread in The Sun about our client Angus Collins' epic adventure.
Record-smashing rower Angus will attempt to row solo and unsupported around the UK in a boat not much bigger than himself.
Why would anyone even think of this extraordinary feat? Because he wants to raise £250k for the brilliant charity James’ Place UK that provides emergency intervention for men in suicidal crisis.
Read his story and about James' Place's work in today's paper and online.

While so many of us were wringing our hands about the issues brought up in TV show Adolescence, youth workers like Jead Clarke were on the ground talking to young men, understanding the lure of toxic influencers and giving boys a safe space to discuss their feelings.
Thank you Maya Oppenheim for visiting OnSide's The Way Youth Zone to report on the charity's crucial work, in today's Observer.

The lure of online misogynistic and violence is damaging vulnerable teens. A new group of youth centres is determined to turn the tide

Our remarkable client Angus Collins is about to attempt a feat never achieved before - to row solo and unsupported around the UK.
Find out why the world's most successful ocean rower has his sights firmly set on circumnavigating England, Wales and Scotland to raise £250,000 for su***de crisis charity James' Place, in today's Times.

Cause's Sam Carlisle stepped in to report on MPs discussing SEND with local authority and school leaders. Lovely comments from Special Needs Jungle readers.

On SNJ Today: Many thanks to parent carer Sam Carlisle for stepping in to ensure you have this excellent summary of the second oral hearing of the . This one looked at funding, but when offered the standard LA anti-parent tropes, The Commons Education Committee MPs declined to be taken in. https://www.specialneedsjungle.com/spotlight-send-funding-education-committee-inquiry-mps-refuse-anti-parent-tropes/

Charity comms relies on storytelling. Extra special care has to be taken with young people's stories but their impact can go beyond anything a press release could ever achieve.
This time last year we worked with Let Us Learn Too, SEND Reform England and our client the Disabled Children's Partnership to create a vibrant video showing what children and young people could achieve if they had access to education. (You can see it on the Let Us Learn Too Insta page.)
One of the stars of the video was Katie, then 16, who had been out of school since she was 12, is autistic, suffered mental health issues and an eating disorder. Katie just wanted to learn in a setting appropriate to her.
She also wanted to be listened to.
We were so blown away by Katie's clarity of thought on this issue that we gently introduced her to trusted journalists at Woman's Hour. She appeared on their SEND special last year.
(You can find it on the BBC Sounds Woman's Hour podcast site).
Today she was back in their studio again, this time with Helen Hayes MP, having given evidence to the House of Commons Education Select Committee yesterday for its investgation into possible solutions to the SEND crisis. Hayley and I were there to watch her, like two proud aunts listening to Katie and four other young disabled women, explain to MPs what they should do.
There is always a duty of care in working with young people but Katie tells us she has found great confidence in her role as an ambassador for young people's needs.
She is one incredible young woman.
(You can see her evidence via Parliamentary.tv and listen again to today's Woman's Hour from 28 minutes on BBC Sounds).
