EYESORE

EYESORE Interdisciplinary collective documenting and communicating experiences of the built environment EYESORE started with friends talking about cities.

We share a political, cultural and personal perspective, that the built environment should be understood not by what it looks like, but the experiences we have of it. In 2015, as a bunch of undergrad final years, all of us sort-of-strangers to each other, we launched our first magazine. Since then, we have published three more issues, organised talks, a publishing fair, exhibitions, screenings and

workshops; all underpinned by a commitment to documenting and communicating experiences of the built environment.

Since the first issue of EYESORE, we wanted to use the back cover as a canvas for an artwork that captures what the issue is about. The illustrations speak for themselves:

Issue 1 by Paul Gogue ()
Issue 2 by Lazar Vukadin
Issue 3 by Jack Dalziel
Issue 4 by Xavier Phillips ()
Issue 5 by Sid Diack ()

It is the final week of our open call around the theme of ‘Building Spaces’. If you have a story you’d like to contribute, now is the time to submit. If you’re an illustrator/artist that might be interested in doing our back cover - please reach out too. And finally, if you know someone who may be interested in our open call please share it along.

EYESORE started in the tower blocks of LCC () back in 2016. What we started as a group of enthusiastic graduates has since turned into 5 magazines, a publishing fair, workshops, talks, exhibitions and many beautiful connections.

The first 3 covers were done by our very own Theodore Plytas (), capturing moments of fascination and absurdities in the urban environment. Issue 4 was done by Alex Kurunis () and we felt it was an important moment to give space on our cover the Latin Village community who was at the time battling in keeping their vital market space in London (a struggle which continues today). And finally, our latest issue 5, the first themed issue on Lost Spaces, we chose a photograph taken by Alys Morisson of the Agar Grove community, facing a similar threat of losing their space due to a Regeneration Project.

Our open call is still open, we’re looking for stories around the theme of ‘Building Spaces’. Submit or share - there is still a bit of time left!

At EYESORE we are committed to sharing experiences of the built environment, and in that spirit we are taking a broad approach to the theme of ‘Building Space’. Issue 6 will explore the ways in which we relate to, interact with, and construct different types of spaces. We’ve broken it up into four subcategories: Everyday, Architectural, Communal, and Imaginative. These spaces are guidelines and often overlap, so if you’re unsure about where you ideas fit, please send it through. We are excited to receive your Open Call submissions for Issue 6!
