💡 Choosing the Right Spring Rate – It’s Not One-Size-Fits-All!
We asked GAZ Shocks how to answer: “What’s the best spring rate for my car?”
Truth is – there’s no single answer. It depends on:
🔹 Tyres (compound, pressure)
🔹 Road surface
🔹 Suspension setup
🔹 Powertrain (FWD, RWD, AWD)
🔹 Purpose of the car
🔹 And most importantly… your driving style
Here’s a quick breakdown 👇
🌍 Road Surface Matters
On a smooth track, a stiff spring keeps tyres glued to the ground.
On bumpy roads, a stiff spring can make the car skip and bounce – not good for grip or comfort.
⚙️ Powertrain Makes a Difference
💡 In FWD race cars, rear springs are often stiffer to shift weight forward and reduce understeer.
💡 In RWD cars, softer rear springs help keep power down and traction high.
🏁 Purpose-Driven Setup
🟢 Drift Cars = Softer rear springs → More squat → More grip at angle
🔴 Race Cars = Firmer front springs → Better braking + sharper turn-in
It's all about weight transfer and how you want the car to behave.
🛞 Tyre Compound is Crucial
Road tyres = Soft sidewalls → Too stiff = overheat, poor performance
Slicks = Harder sidewalls → Need stiffness to generate heat + grip
Match your spring rate to your rubber.
🎯 Final Word
Spring rates don’t come in a “perfect fit” – they come down to balance and preference.
Think about where you want the weight to go when braking, turning, or accelerating. That’s what spring rates are all about.
