"We're much stronger when we stand together" 🥃

Spanning countries and cultures, the Nordic region is home to some of the most innovative 'new world whisky' distillers. With a whisky scene that has developed rapidly in the last few decades, multi-level collaboration is fast becoming a key cornerstone of the region's whisky industry.

To find out how Nordic distilleries are choosing collaboration over competition, Heather Storgaard caught up with Aurora Spirit Distillery and Thy Whisky, two whisky makers getting to the heart of what it means to be a modern Nordic distillery.

"What I love the most is creating something timeless," Balmain's Olivier Rousteing told Millie Milliken, reflecting on his new Johnnie Walker collection, made in close collaboration with master blender Dr Emma Walker 🥃

A series of luxury blended Scotch whiskies inspired by the four seasons, the Couture Expressions collection melds the arts of couture and blending — and puts luxury whisky under the microscope.

"Every collaboration is really special when you push boundaries," says Rousteing. "What I loved about this collaboration with Johnnie Walker is that the brand is really anchored in the past, but always looks to the future."

Do you have synaesthesia? 👅🔉🎨

If so, you’re in good company! Vincent van Gogh, Marilyn Monroe, and Charli XCX all reportedly have this neurological trait that causes one sensory input, such as sound or taste, to trigger an involuntary perception of another.

Learn more: https://www.whiskymag.com/articles/taste-colour-and-sound-fettercairn-partners-with-cult-scottish-musicians-for-synaesthesia-inspired-whiskies/

Gregg Glass, master blender at Fettercairn Distillery, “tastes in colour”. This experience informs his multi-sensory approach to making single malt, and he often blends to music.

To explore this, Fettercairn has teamed up with singer-songwriter Kathryn Joseph and Barry Burns from the post-rock band Mogwai. Together, they’ve worked with Gregg to compose a track called Lorica Pink that follows the colours, shapes, and flavours of two Fettercairn drams called Vanguard.

Vanguard 29 Years Old has had a secondary maturation in a rare ‘pink’ French oak cask designed to boost berry fruit flavours, while the NAS Vanguard has been finished in custom-coopered ‘hybrid’ American and Scottish oak casks.

Looking back at the third auction 🌟

The auction totalled £2.9 million from the sale of its 39 lots, smashing pre-sale estimates. One hundred per cent of the hammer price — totalling £2.3 million — will be donated to charity. That means a total of £6.6 million raised for charity since the auction launched in 2021.

"The resounding success is the result of an incredible collective endeavour across the Scotch whisky industry to create meaningful and lasting change," said Beanie Espey-Geraedts, managing director of the Distillers One of One.

What does it take to make an 85-year-old whisky? Patience, mostly, but also artistry, skill, and timing.

Earlier this week, unveiled its 85-year-old whisky — thought to be the oldest single malt Scotch whisky ever released. Distilled at the Glenlivet Distillery in 1940, the whisky's decanter has been designed by architect Jeanne Gang to reflect the branches of an oak tree, inspired by the oak cask that held the whisky for more than eight decades of ageing.
