Back in 2014, a conversation with Russell Doherty led to me taking this picture of him paying tribute to the fallen Guernsey men with a rest-on-arms reversed drill stance by the war memorial at the top of Smith St, St Peter Port.
We shot this early in the morning to avoid drawing too much attention.
It was an overcast, dull start to the day, but by some strange quirk of fate, once in position, the clouds parted and soon as I started shooting, a large shaft of light lit up the war memorial and Russell’s shadow was cast onto the names of the fallen, something we didn’t plan and made this an extraordinary, wonderful tribute.
