At The Brighton Centre last night (09.12.24) The Human League sure knew how to put on a show.

The huge stage curtain dropped but where were they? Then all eyes were drawn high above the stage and there up in the rafters of the venue Suzanne Sulley, Joannne Catherall And Phil Oakey of The Human League were gracefully lowered to stage upon the top of a moving and pulsating light rig. Once harnesses were removed the show kicked off to the familiar dizzy sounds of Love Action from 1981’s Dare album.

Everything from the synthesizer sounds, the guitars and the band member on keytar was pristine and engaging throughout - including the huge white angular stage set. It could've beeen straight out of a classic sci fi movie - beam me up Scotty!

With over 40 years of songs to choose from the setlist spanned the decades with fan favourites such as Empire State Human, where Phil jumped from the stage and crouched down below the barrier and hid to sing the lines …

Tall, tall, tall

I want to be tall, tall, tall

As big as a wall, wall, wall.

Before attempting to climb back to the stage but finding the whole thing exhausting and difficult to huge cheers from the crowd.

Of course, the biggest reception was given to the classics: The Lebanon, Open Your Heart, The Sound Of The Crowd and Don’t You Want Me.

An amazing night in the company of a timeless band finished with an encore of Together In Electric Dreams.

“My work has always been about place. I am fascinated by the way geometry can be discerned in landscape, and my preferred landscapes are mountains or the desert.” Here and Now, There and Then at Towner Eastbourne presents a selection of sculptures and drawings by internationally renowned artist Nigel Hall RA, open until 3rd March 2025 in Studio 2. A Royal Academician since 2003, Hall is one of the most respected sculptors in contemporary British Art. Whilst best known for his 3D work, drawing has always been an essential part of his practice whether as an idea for a sculpture or in its own right he continually uses it as a medium to explore space, light, shadow and structure. https://magazine.brighton.co.uk/Noticeboard/Brighton-News/Towner-Eastbourne-Present-An-Exhibition-Of-Works-By-Internationally-Renowned-Artist-Nigel-Hall/39_111_7344

"What is so brilliant about this play is the audiences who love and remember Eric, Tommy and Bob will be able to relive their comedy greatness and those that don't, will be introduced to the genius of these national treasures.” Following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, producers Jamie Wilson and Emily Wood bring The Last Laugh to Theatre Royal Brighton, in February 2025. The play stars Bob Golding as Eric Morecambe, Damian Williams as Tommy Cooper and Simon Cartwright as Bob Monkhouse who all reprise their roles following the Edinburgh run. https://magazine.brighton.co.uk/Theatre-and-Comedy/Coming-Up/The-Last-Laugh-Morecambe-Cooper-and-Monkhouse-Brought-To-Life-On-Stage-at-Theatre-Royal-Brighton/30_66_7345

“This parting song is inspired by our singing weekends, which we dearly love and cherish. We are overjoyed that we've managed to capture some singing weekenders at the end of this track." Out now is Dear Companions, the new single from The Unthanks (who play Hastings White Rock Theatre and Worthing Assembly Hall, this December), taken from the band’s forthcoming double album, The Unthanks In Winter, which will be released on 29th November 2024. Dear Companions is the closing track on the mammoth forthcoming double album, The Unthanks In Winter - a dream-like winter fantasia, embracing both the dark and the light in the most ritualistic of seasons. https://magazine.brighton.co.uk/Clubs-and-Music/Reviews/The-Unthanks-In-Winter-Future-Classic-Double-Album-Of-The-Christmas-Genre-To-Be-Played-Out-Over-Two-Nights-and-Two-Venues-In-Sussex/21_45_7326

"If there is a theme it's probably about accepting that I prefer being at home and not having to deal with any other human beings. Which is a weird way to approach a tour show where you have to travel around the country talking to thousands of people!" You may well know Josh Widdicombe from Channel 4's award-winning show The Last Leg, his podcast Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett, or his many appearances on panel shows. He is a witty, relatable observer of life's foibles with a keen eye for the absurd side of the mundane. In his brand new show, entitled Not My Cup Of Tea, which comes to Brighton Dome next April, he takes stock of the little things that ni**le him, from motorway hotels to children's parties. "Those who have just got a diagnosis, or whose child is already sick. They know that Christmas day will be spent on a ward, in a treatment room or having surgery. But we also support the families who don't know they are going to be in hospital yet .. " Could you support Rockinghorse Children's Charity and help make sure no child misses out on the Christmas they deserve this year, even if they are spending time in hospital? More than 3,500 children end up in Brighton's Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital for one reason or another during the festive season. Whether you're a local business, school, community group or individual donor, can you help them make the difference to thousands of children in hospital this Christmas? https://magazine.brighton.co.uk/Noticeboard/Brighton-News/Give-A-Little-Of-Your-Seasonal-Time-and-Cheer-By-Spending-Time-Supporting-Needs-Of-Children-In-Brighton-Hospital-Over-Christmas/39_111_7341

“We sing these songs because we are the same people that would have sung them 200 years ago. It's not a fantasy, or a cosplay, it's a reality, for us. Trying to make the music ours, our own tradition, to tease out a link to past communities and all their threads and tendrils, mix and match as people assimilated into the city.” Sussex-bound Stick In The Wheel's fourth studio album is a satirical celebration of mistakes. A joyous lambasting of everyone and everything that's wrong in the world, against the real-time backdrop of global uncertainty, corruption and political unrest. Interested? "As a q***r, working-class, and disabled artist, having this support, while being given the space to develop and grow my practice, leaves me almost speechless." Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival has announced two new In-House Artists for 2024-25. The In-House Artists scheme offers mentoring opportunities with Brighton Dome's programming team and its In-House Artist alumni, plus access to Anita’s Room, the dedicated creative space in Brighton Dome's refurbished Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre, supported by The Roddick Foundation: "This year we will be developing a new show, so access to Anita's Room will enable us to do in-depth research and build a company of musicians and performers who can co-create this with us." https://magazine.brighton.co.uk/Theatre-and-Comedy/Coming-Up/Brighton-Dome-and-Brighton-Festival-Announce-New-In-House-Artists-/30_66_7340

“Our volunteers' efforts over the festive season are so important for our Oxfam shops. They are not only there to help shoppers with everything they need to make their Christmas perfect, but they are also helping us to raise vital funds to tackle poverty and inequality across the world." With seven shops across Brighton preparing for another busy Christmas, Oxfam is calling on residents who are able to generously donate some of their time to volunteering and helping raise vital funds for tackling poverty and inequality across the world. https://magazine.brighton.co.uk/Noticeboard/Brighton-News/Oxfam-Volunteers-Needed-In-Brighton-As-Countdown-To-Second-Hand-Christmas-Shopping-Surge-Begins/39_111_7339

“To refine our focus, we decided to dive into an area we feel connected to - and we believe many others do too: computer gaming .. It is our contribution to building a world for dedicated and talented designers and gamers - a bold leap toward establishing a shared platform where they can collaborate and shape the future of gaming.” University of Brighton is hosting a tech-inspired exhibition exploring how the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in architecture can transform the gaming industry. The two-week long exhibition titled 'Game on: Level-up. City for Gamers' is designed to showcase how AI tools could be used to create futuristic gaming environments. https://magazine.brighton.co.uk/Noticeboard/Brighton-News/Exhibition-On-Next-Generation-Architecture-To-Transform-University-of-Brighton-To-Gaming-Tourism-Destination/39_111_7347

“These songs are about trading modern society for a wilder, more feral existence. Songs that dig deep into the meaning of life and our purpose on Earth. They provide an exit strategy from a boring dystopia by gambling the flood for a fairy tale." Sussex-bound musician Beans on Toast is soon to release new album Wild Goose Chasers. While its idiosyncratic title may be typical of the wry turn-of-phrase we have come to expect from the Essex songwriter, listeners should expect a very different animal for his latest release. A collection of newfangled pagan hymns to coincide with the end of truth, these sparsely-arranged, supernaturally-shaded songs promise to be unlike anything the artist has conjured previously. https://magazine.brighton.co.uk/Clubs-and-Music/Reviews/Collection-Of-Newfangled-Pagan-Hymns-Bring-Folk-Legend-Beans-On-Toast-To-Shoreham-In-Sussex-/21_45_7323
