Business Skills Training Equips Lilongwe Youth for Self-Reliance

Wednesday, August 13th, 2025
Capital City, Lilongwe, Malawi 🇲🇼

Thirty young people from Traditional Authority Tsabango in Lilongwe have acquired business management skills aimed at helping them become self-reliant in the face of high unemployment rates.

The training, facilitated by Youth Action for Success and Development (Yasd) under the Local Green Innovation Champions (Logic) Project, encouraged participants to develop entrepreneurial ventures that can meet their daily needs and contribute to their communities’ economic growth.

Yasd Finance and Administration Manager, Chimwemwe Mugaba, said many young Malawians struggle to secure formal employment, making entrepreneurship a viable path to financial independence.

“Our message to the youth is clear do not wait for jobs that may not come; create opportunities for yourselves,” Mugaba said during the closing ceremony.

Participants expressed optimism that the skills gained would enable them to run successful businesses. Patrick Siliya, one of the trainees, said the program had equipped him with leadership and financial management knowledge, while fellow participant Linda Chatsika noted she could now apply practical strategies to improve her business operations.

The Logic Project, funded by IM Swedish Development Partners, supports initiatives that promote sustainable livelihoods and local innovation in rural and peri-urban communities.

Misinformation Threat Prompts MEC to Strengthen Media Skills in the Northern Region

Wednesday, August 13th, 2025
Mzuzu, Malawi 🇲🇼

With misinformation on the rise fueled in part by unverified content on social media the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has moved to equip journalists in the northern region with the tools to report elections accurately and responsibly.

Speaking at a media training session in Mzuzu, MEC Head of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said journalists are a frontline defense against falsehoods that could mislead voters and erode trust in the democratic process.

The training targets members of the Nyika Media Club (NMC) and focuses on electoral reporting and procedures.

“The media has a huge role to play in providing accurate information to eligible voters so they can make informed choices. We urge journalists to avoid giving platforms to political leaders or other individuals to mislead the nation on election-related matters without first verifying the facts.”Said Mwafulirwa.

Nyika Media Club Chairperson, Feston Malekezo, hailed the training as timely, noting that the spread of unverified information by self-proclaimed online journalists has complicated the media landscape.

“This will help equip professional journalists with the skills to report responsibly, thanking MEC for taking steps to safeguard credible electoral coverage. Said
Malekezo

IMF Warns of Economic Crisis in Malawi as Debt and Inflation Spiral

July 23rd, 2025
Capital City, Lilongwe, Malawi 🇲🇼

Malawi’s economy is teetering on the brink of crisis, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warning of soaring debt, crippling foreign exchange shortages, and persistently high inflation. In a stark assessment issued Tuesday,23,2025 the IMF said its Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program with Malawi was terminated in May without completing a single review, cutting off access to vital financial support.

The IMF’s report, endorsed by its Executive Board, paints a troubling picture: inflation remains at 27.7 percent, economic growth has slowed significantly, and public debt has surged to 88 percent of GDP. With the country maintaining a fixed exchange rate, foreign exchange reserves have plummeted to less than one week’s worth of imports, threatening Malawi’s ability to sustain essential goods such as fuel, medicines, and food.

“Malawi faces acute economic challenges that require urgent and decisive policy actions,” the IMF cautioned, urging the government to address fiscal and structural weaknesses.

The IMF is pressing Malawi’s authorities to raise domestic revenue, cut unnecessary public spending, and implement exchange rate reforms to ease mounting pressure on the kwacha. The Fund has also called for stronger debt management and anti-corruption measures to restore donor confidence and unlock international financial support.

The termination of the ECF program is a major setback for Malawi, which had hoped to leverage the facility to stabilize its economy and attract other donors. Without IMF backing, the government faces an uphill battle to secure foreign financing and stabilize the economy, which is already grappling with the aftermath of drought, declining to***co exports, and rising global commodity prices.

Analysts warn that unless reforms are accelerated, the country risks sinking deeper into economic turmoil, with potentially severe consequences for social stability.
