On 15 April 2019, Koppert Biological Systems acquired Oecos (www.oecos.co.uk), a British company focused on the development and production of trapping systems for agriculture and horticulture. The acquisition of this family concern includes all fixed assets, customer base, IP and the company’s name, Oecos. Products include Rollertraps, Wet & Dry Sticky Traps and Pheromone related products. Not only have Oecos and Koppert Biological Systems been partners for many years, Koppert was also one of Oecos’s major customers and as the sticky trap product portfolio is of great importance to Koppert, they subsequently decided to approach Oecos to discuss future steps. This eventually led to the acquisition. For further information email [email protected] .

Germany plans an insect protection law to slash the use of pesticides and pump tens of millions of euros into research, as global concern grows over the impact of human beings on the crucial invertebrates. “We human beings need insects, they deserve to be protected with their own law,” said Environment Minister Svenja Schulze. Her “action plan for protecting insects”, would allegedly provide annual funding of €100m for the cause, including €25m for research. [ 242 more words ]

Over 40% of insect species are threatened with extinction. Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera and dung beetles (Coleoptera) are the taxa most affected. Four aquatic taxa are imperiled and have already lost a large proportion of species. Habitat loss by conversion to intensive agriculture is the main driver of the declines. Agro-chemical pollutants, invasive species and climate change are additional causes. A scientific review of insect numbers suggests that 40% of species are undergoing "dramatic rates of decline" around the world. [ 449 more words ]
