LEAVE TO REMAIN

Leave to Remain is a new contemporary dance work, with live Indian classical vocals, conceived as a pilgrimage of body and place that explores memory and desire. Leave to Remain is a technical term for the official permission granted by authorities to stay in the UK for a period of time. In this work objects become markers of memory and accumulate like sediment. Loss is made visible through transformation, at times chaotic and at others deeply joyous,, as four performers map fragile transitional spaces. The work is an invitation by choreographer Akshay Sharma into belonging, transformation and location.

On a life-sized chessboard, a single pawn dares to rise. Checkmate is a visceral physical theatre piece fusing spoken word and movement to tell the story of one fighter’s climb from nothing to power — and the price she must pay to get there.

As the battle for a foster care centre rages, every move brings her closer to the queen she longs to become — and farther from the person she used to be. When victory demands sacrifice, betrayal, and blood, she must face the ultimate question: is it all worth it?

Based on a true story, Strong is a powerful one woman show that delves into the complexities of loss, faith, grief, joy, hope, and resilience in the face of adversity. Through the eyes of Elena, a British Greek Cypriot 40 something single mother of two, the audience is taken on an emotional bittersweet journey, injected with humour, as she navigates parenthood, relationships, family and identity through the unimaginable: her 15-year-old daughter Lia’s cancer diagnosis and treatment.

It’s 2010. Think pink iPods, Lady Gaga’s meat dress, a catastrophic general election - and austerity. 
Summer has just turned eighteen. She’s grateful to have her whole life ahead of her, but the future feels fragile. Slimy men in blue ties are squeezing the country dry, coming for her education next. She dreams of becoming a photographer - but it’s hard to dream when the world is on fire. 
The answer? Change the world. By protesting against student fees. Armed with her camera, her oldest friend, and a Maya Angelou quote, Summer discovers that protest really does change everything.
