Are We Making Disciples or Just Moving Them?
In a culture where numbers often define success, it’s easy for churches to celebrate growth without asking a deeper question: What kind of growth is it?
Many churches today are growing—but not always through new believers coming to faith. Instead, much of this growth comes from Christians moving from one church to another. While welcoming believers is a good and healthy thing, we must be careful not to confuse transfer growth with kingdom growth.
Some have called this the “sheep trade market”—a cycle where churches grow by gaining members from one another rather than reaching those who are far from Christ. And while there is nothing wrong with receiving believers into a church family, something is off when that becomes the primary source of growth.
Jesus’ call in Matthew 28 is clear: make disciples. Not shift them. Not reshuffle them. But lead people who are far from God into a life-changing relationship with Him.
When a church becomes comfortable simply gaining members from other congregations, it risks losing its missional focus. The Great Commission isn’t about “sharing the pie”—it’s about expanding it. Real growth happens when lives are transformed, when the lost are found, and when disciples are made.
This is why resources like The Soul Winning Church are so valuable. This book challenges churches to renew their passion for evangelism and to cultivate a culture where reaching the lost is central—not secondary.
Imagine a church where:
• Evangelism is a natural part of everyday life
• Members see themselves as missionaries in their neighborhoods
• Growth is measured not just by attendance, but by transformed lives
That’s the kind of church Jesus envisioned.
A simple challenge for us this week:
Who is one person in your life who doesn’t know Christ? Pray for them, pursue a conversation, and trust God to work.
Let’s be a church that doesn’t just grow—but grows the right way. Let’s make disciples. 🙏
