The designer and author Pearl Lowe spent six years admiring Selwood Lodge in Somerset from afar until a “silly offer” made her and her musician husband, Danny Goffey, its proud owners back in 2017. Blending gothic revival architecture with European villa-style romance, the property’s fishscale roof and trefoil windows make for something out of a fairytale.

“It’s a real entertaining place, we’ve had lots and lots of parties here — my son’s 21st, my daughter’s 18th … one year Danny and I staged a festival,” Pearl says, a tad wistfully.

Now their home is on the market with .house as the couple seek to downsize. The grade II listed lodge was built in 1825 for a couple and their 10 children. Pearl still has the framed photographs to prove it: “The wife was called Augustus and she wore a crown.”

The sense of history is felt deeply by Pearl; as the Liberty-print tea dresses and lace-centric homewares that her eponymous brand specialises in attest, she views the world through a nostalgic filter. “I quite like houses to look like film sets … I feel that sometimes I never want to grow up and just be in a fantasy world, like Peter Pan. So I hang dressing-up clothes and disco balls everywhere.”

Behold the burl wood renaissance! The chicest interiors schemes in high-end homes are increasingly embracing this distinct type of wood as a luxurious design accent.

Burl wood has an intricate, galaxy-like grain with a curious creation story: the knotty irregularities are often a result of a bulbous growth deformity — a burl — on trees as a result of stress, infection or injury.

The interior designer Tatjana von Stein describes burl wood as a “conceptual juxtaposition”, as the material has “historically been considered a noble wood but is actually cut from the disease of a tree”. Burls affect many tree species whether walnut, oak, maple, birch or cherry.

As well as its A-list fans, upmarket interior designers have fallen under burl’s spell: from Victoria Beckham’s designer Rose Uniacke to ’s Athena Calderone (who used burl heavily throughout her recent furniture collection for ). A townhouse at the luxe London development Chelsea Barracks features a bespoke walnut burl headboard designed by Edo Mapelli Mozzi, the chief executive of Banda and husband of Princess Beatrice.

“The paraphernalia of childhood is, quite simply, not chic,” admits Katherine Ormerod, a mum and interiors writer. “Sure, you can start with pastel-shaded wooden toys and industrially designed playthings, but the primary-coloured polymers are, at some point, coming for you.”

“After seven years writing about my experiences with my children, I know far better than to tell any other person in service to the next generation what to do. However, if you are feeling that they have taken over every centimetre of your home space and that has begun to bother you enough to do something about it, I have some ideas.”

Chalk Paint inventor Annie Sloan started upcycling in the 1970s, finding pieces in jumble sales and junk shops. “The first piece I painted was a simple blanket box that was lined with old Victorian newspapers, which I loved,” she explains. “The outsides were very plain, so I painted them with a landscape of mythical, exotic and farm animals in a mix of trees, from palm trees to oak trees, set in a geometric pattern inspired by early American folk art. I used acrylic paints that dried very hard, giving the piece the wrong feel. I still have it in my house in Normandy and it is used for blankets.”

In her new book, Colourful Living, the paint guru shares her tips for upcycling, from lamps to bedheads — all you need is a pot of paint and some imagination.

"Using sensory design we can create homes that reduce stress and anxiety; improve sleep or heighten focus; foster connection and positive social interactions; support neurodivergent and highly sensitive individuals; and enhance overall wellbeing,” says Pippa Jameson, an interiors stylist and the author of The Sensory Home: An Inspiring Guide to Mindful Decorating.

"Noise pollution, harsh lighting, overpowering colours and synthetic scents can all contribute to sensory discomfort. By raising awareness, my goal is to help people create homes that actively support wellbeing rather than hinder it.”
