The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced an online platform called MeDevIS (Medical Devices Information System), the first global open-access clearing house for information on medical devices.

“The number of medical technologies used in health care is growing, as is their complexity, which can make it challenging for health care practitioners and patients to navigate,” said Dr Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products.

📢 New research has shown that exposure to fine particulate matter before IVF egg retrieval can reduce the odds of achieving a live birth by almost 40%.

Dr Sebastian Leathersich, lead author of the study, explained, “This is the first study that has used frozen embryo transfer cycles to separately analyse the effects of pollutant exposure during the development of eggs and around the time of embryo transfer and early pregnancy. We could therefore evaluate whether pollution was having an effect on the eggs themselves, or on the early stages of pregnancy.”

Researchers from the University of Helsinki and Stanford University investigated whether transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) could transform the way depression is treated, especially in patients who do not respond to more traditional methods such as medication.

“Magnetic stimulation is an effective treatment for patients whose depression is not alleviated by medication. However, about half of these patients do not receive significant help from TMS. The biomarker we studied may help predict who will benefit from the therapy. In the future, it may also be possible to tailor the treatment individually,” commented postdoctoral researcher Juha Gogulski from Stanford, University of Helsinki and Aalto University.
