If you employ anyone... even one part-timer, even family...October brings two changes under the Employment Rights Act 2025.

We’re accountants, not employment solicitors but payroll sits right next door to all of this, and we’d far rather flag it now than hear about it later. If you’re not sure where your business stands, have a word and we’ll point you towards the right help.

This one matters, and it’s easy to miss, so stay with me.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started this April for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000.

The next wave is £30,000 - from 6 April 2027.

Here’s the bit most people haven’t clocked: the return that decides whether you’re in that wave is the 2025/26 one. The one you’re about to file. HMRC looks at your qualifying income on that return, then writes to tell you you’re mandated.

Qualifying income means gross turnover from self-employment and property, before expenses. Not profit. Turnover. And if you’ve got both, they’re added together.

So a smallholding with a bit of rental income and some contracting can be nowhere near £30,000 of profit and comfortably over the line on turnover.

Which is exactly why filing early is worth more than usual this year. Do it now and you’ll know your MTD start date with around 18 months to prepare. Leave it to January and you’ll find out with ten weeks to go, in the middle of tax return season, when every accountant in the country is flat out.

Ask us to check your 2025/26 figures now it’s a quick look, and it takes the guesswork out entirely.

Everyone knows about 31 January. Far fewer people know about 5 October and it’s the one that catches people out.

If you had income in the 2025/26 tax year that HMRC doesn’t already know about, you need to tell them by 5 October 2026. Miss it, and a penalty can follow.

Registering isn’t the same as paying. Nothing is due until 31 January 2027. This is simply the paperwork that lets you file at all.

And here’s the honest bit: register in early October and you’ve got nearly four months to get it right. Registeron 20 January and you’ve got a fortnight and a headache.

Not sure whether it applies to you? Drop us a message, it’s usually a two-minute answer.

If you have been meaning to sort out your bookkeeping, your tax return or your first set of company accounts, and you keep putting it off because you are not quite sure where to start, this one is for you.
I am Kim, and I run KC Accountancy Services, a small independent practice here in Llanfyllin. I look after sole traders, landlords, partnerships and limited companies. Plenty of my clients are local and plenty are not, so wherever you are, do get in touch.
I have put together a short enquiry form. It takes about two minutes, there is no obligation at all, and I will come back to you within one working day with some honest thoughts on where you stand.

Let’s talk about the thing nobody says out loud.

There comes a point where a business stops needing an accountant to file things and starts needing one to tell them things. Most owners cross that line about two years before they notice.

None of that is a you problem. It’s a service problem. A cheap annual tax return does exactly what it says on the tin, it files a tax return. It was never going to help you grow.

What we do instead: regular check-ins, numbers you can actually see during the year, and a proper conversation before the decision rather than a bill after it.

If you read that list and winced at three or more, come and talk to us. First conversation’s free, and there’s no obligation whatsoever. ☕

Forget January. September is when things actually start again.

The kids go back. Show season winds down. The diary suddenly has space in it, and you get that first quiet morning in weeks where you can hear yourself think.

That’s when most business decisions really get made. Not on New Year’s Day with a hangover and a list of resolutions...but now, in a quiet kitchen, with a paned (cuppa) and four months left of the year.

So, while you’ve got the headspace, one question worth sitting with:

If the next four months went really well, what would be different by Christmas?

Not “more sales”; Something specific. A price finally raised. Someone taken on. A quote given without that sinking feeling. A month where the tax pot didn’t get raided.

Tell us in the comments...we’re nosy, and we do love a good goal.

Selling eggs at the gate? Crafts at the market? A bit of freelance work on the side?

Here’s one worth knowing: the £1,000 trading allowance means you can earn up to £1,000 from casual self-employment in a tax year without needing to tell HMRC.

Over that? You may need to register and with Making Tax Digital now here, it’s worth getting set up properly from day one. A little chat with us now saves a headache later. ☕
