The New Prince of Juju Music, Segum Adewale sits down to discuss and perform his track ‘Yo-Pop Music’ back in 1980s Nigeria.

Born into a royal family in 1955, Adewale’s interest in music met strong disapproval, leading him to move from his home in Oshogbo to Lagos. It was here he made his career and pioneered Yo-Pop beyond this track into a genre of its own.

Adewale is one of the many incredible artists making up Nigeria 80, the successor to our Nigeria 70 series.

This compilation showcases the extraordinary breadth of talent of the era, with all tracks reissued here for the first time.

Strut presents the final, and one of the most rewarding, albums by Brian Auger & The Trinity, 1970’s “Befour” now available to pre-order on Vinyl LP.

Befour marked the final chapter of Brian Auger’s celebrated Trinity era before he launched Oblivion Express, bringing to a close several years of exploring and refining his distinctive blend of jazz-rock, Hammond soul and prog elements. Drawing on the band’s wide-ranging influences, the album is built around inspired reinterpretations that showcase the band’s virtuosity and adventurous spirit, including Sly & The Family Stone’s “I Wanna Take You Higher”, “Pavane”, adapted from Gabriel Fauré’s celebrated classical composition and one of the most inventive covers of Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage”, and Traffic’s “No Time to Live”.

Here discuss the changing dynamics around gender within the Nigerian music scene and society at large during the 70’s.

Always ahead of their time, the sisters were a highly influential act combining Afrobeat sounds with jazz and disco.

Featured on our Nigeria 70 compilation, their comments perfectly lay out a major motivation for our sequel to the series, Nigeria 80.

Just like they predicted in this excerpt, the 80’s marked a significant rise in visibility for female artists, with trailblazers like Onyeka Onwenu helping to reshape the landscape and open doors for a new generation of performers, writers, and producers.

A couple days ago we announced Malcolm Catto’s Quatermass Sound Lab compilation, with the lead single Shopping Parade from the prolific post-punk group

Shopping Parade is a pounding lament for that increasingly endangered British habitat: the market town high street. Once the centre of civic life, commerce and mild public inconvenience, the high street has become a familiar parade of shuttered shops, boarded-up windows and opportunities to convert former banks into luxury flats.

In Shopping Parade, Snapped Ankles survey the ruins and find themselves drawn to West Midlands town Atherstone on a wet Shrove Tuesday, where the boarded-up town centre provides the perfect arena for one of Britain’s surviving medieval traditions: mob football.

Produced and engineered by Malcolm Catto, Shopping Parade builds its tension steadily before erupting into a violent barrage of pounding drums - a chance to let off steam in every sense. In Atherstone, steaming rucks fill the streets as bodies collide in a ritual that is part sport, part pagan survival mechanism and part unofficial town-planning consultation.

More than a producer retrospective, Quatermass Sound Lab is a portrait of an artist whose fingerprints can be found across some of the most adventurous records of the last twenty years.

Today we announce a very special release, deep diving into the world of London’s Quatermess Sound Lab, the studio behind the works of producer, drummer, engineer and co-founder to The Heliocentrics - Malcolm Catto.

Over the last two decades Catto has quietly established himself as a sought-after sonic architect in contemporary music. His remarkable discography spans from collaborations with Yussef Dayes, DJ Shadow, Madlib, Quantic, Mulatu Astatke and countless others, each project using analogue wizardry to shape bold recordings.

This collection opens the Quatermass archive for the first time. Gathering previously unreleased recordings, alternate versions and mixes that chart Catto’s evolution from the likes of Snapped Ankles, Wet Enough!?, Vanishing Twin and more.

Our upcoming deep dive into the explosive sound world of 1980’s Nigeria, the follow-up to the iconic ‘Nigeria 70’ series, gets the Dinked Edition treatment!

This very limited Dinked Edition is limited to only 400 copies, and is pressed on Inkplosion Vinyl (one red & white, one black & white), contains a fold-out A2 poster and is housed in a gatefold sleeve. We love what the crew at Dinked do and the care they take with each (very selective) release, so it’s a pleasure to be teaming up on a pre-order for a compilation so close to our hearts.

‘Ana Marie’ the new single from ‘s upcoming album is out now.

Few groups embody the spirit of African music like Orchestra Baobab. Formed over 50 years ago as the resident band of the Baobab Club in Dakar, their timeless fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms, Wolof griot traditions, mbalax, Congolese rumba and jazz continue to resonate across generations and continents.

Their first album in 10 years, ‘Made in Senegal’ is a combination of old and new, with new members bringing fresh perspectives to the incredible foundations laid by the veterans.

Nigeria 80 showcases the extraordinary breadth of this era, with all tracks reissued here for the first time, bringing together essential recordings from across Nigeria’s musical spectrum: highlife, juju, Afrobeat, reggae, and early fusion sounds - from Victor Uwaifo and Nico Mbarga to Evi-Edna Ogholi and I.C. Rock.

Available as a black vinyl 2LP housed in a gatefold sleeve, there’s also a a red vinyl 2LP or CD digipak exclusive to US indies, alongside a 16-page booklet with artist photos and liner notes by Francis Gooding.
