🚗 The Lost Legacy of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club 🚗

In December 2002, I reflected on the closure of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club (RSAC) and the mysterious disappearance of valuable motoring memorabilia. Among the club’s treasures was a unique 1905 Rolls-Royce, bequeathed with the stipulation that it stay in Scotland. Sadly, it now languishes in Essex, awaiting restoration. As the RSAC’s assets were sold off, important parts of Scotland’s motoring heritage risk being lost to the public. The mystery deepens as legal avenues are explored to respect the wishes of the donor and safeguard this historic vehicle.

Published December 2002 George Oliver’s Profile Publication No 49 with James Leech artwork described the unique 1905 Rolls-Royce of Adam McGregor Dick that languished in Essex. RSAC Death at a hundred and two can usually be faced equably. It is a good innings. But the financial ghosts following th...

🚗 Volkswagen: Piëch’s Genius vs. Pischetsrieder’s Task Ahead 🚗

In 2002, I reflected on the challenges Bernd Pischetsrieder faced as he took over from Dr. Ferdinand Piëch at VW. Piëch’s genius was undeniable, having streamlined the brand’s platforms and created iconic models. Yet, under Pischetsrieder, VW struggled with overlapping brands like Audi, VW, Seat, and Skoda, and a shrinking market share. While Piëch’s passion for innovation pushed VW into luxury and racing, Pischetsrieder’s task was to restore focus and clarity. The task ahead for VW? Avoiding repetition and rediscovering its unique identity.

VW Group Piëch and Pischetsrieder We were a Wolseley family, we had Tens, a splendid grey and blue Fourteen and a troublesome 6/80. Next door had Rovers, up-market, quiet, smooth and stylish. A schoolboy could tell you that a Wolseley was only a tarted-up Morris with a radiator badge that lit up, t...

🚗 Reflecting on the European Car of the Year Award: Why the Renault 16 Deserved the Title 🚗

In my 2002 article for Scotland on Sunday, I argued that the European Car of the Year (ECOTY) had lost some of its prestige. A key point I made was how the Renault 16, a true pioneer in the hatchback market, was an ideal winner, showcasing innovation and practicality.

By contrast, I considered the decision to award the Porsche 928 GTS in 1998 a mistake—showing how the award was becoming more about trends than true merit.

The Renault 16 stood as a symbol of what the ECOTY should be about: groundbreaking design and real-world impact.

Renault 16, pioneer hatchback. A commendable COTY: Porsche 928GTS a mistake, decided COTY. COTY The testimony of European Cars of the Year (COTY) jury has hardly been encouraging. The most prolific winner, Fiat (seven firsts, five seconds) has just collapsed to “junk bond” status, which does not...

🚗 Reflecting on Traffic in Towns and Road Pricing 🚗

In 2002, I revisited David Begg's Commission for Integrated Transport, which proposed road pricing to manage congestion—echoing the ideas of Professor Colin Buchanan’s 1963 Traffic in Towns report. While the concept of fiscal neutrality and using technology to ease traffic made sense, the government seemed unwilling to embrace such a visionary approach. The question remains: can we move beyond taxes and rethink road use?

Traffic in Towns, Colin Buchanan. My 1963 review copy of Professor Buchanan’s report welcomed by The Motor as the most comprehensive document of its kind ever. David Begg and the Commission for Integrated Transport The Fleet Street Group of motoring correspondents is a shadowy outfit. It dates bac...

Originally written for Scotland on Sunday back in 2002, this insightful piece highlights why aluminium—rust-proof, lightweight, and fully recyclable—is once again driving automotive innovation. Jackie Stewart has been obsessive about money throughout the years I knew him. Yet his pursuit of riches was motivated less by acquisitiveness, so much as showing the world how well he was doing. Derided at school as a result of dyslexia, failed (in his terms) as an Olympic class shot, but as compet...
