Have you received your new wheelie bins yet?
Residents in Leigh-on-Sea have begun to have their shiny new bins delivered – some are happy with them; others are appalled saying it will change the aesthetic of the streets.
Letters have been sent out to Southend residents informing them of the outcome of an ‘initial assessment’ as to whether they will receive wheelie bins or remain on a sack delivery, if they have insufficient space for bins on their property.
For those that have been told to expect the new wheelie bins, the deliveries will continue throughout August and into September.
However, the new bins will not come into use until the week commencing 28th October.
Residents will receive three 180 Litre bins as standard:
- Blue lid bin: for cardboard and paper
- Pink lid bin: for recyclable plastic, metal, and glass
- Black bin: for residual waste (soft plastic, sanitary waste, pet waste)
Each wheelie bin is 0.72m deep x 0.5m wide. They are below 1.1m in height.
Councillor Lydia Hyde, cabinet member for climate, environment and waste, said: “We know that this is a significant change for Southend, and there is understandable concern on social media about whether there is space for wheelie bins on their properties and how the new fortnightly collections will work in practice.
“We are listening to residents’ views and we have been actively promoting the review process. We’ve also updated our Frequently Asked Questions to reflect many of the questions that have been shared online.
“These changes are about improving recycling, keeping our streets cleaner, and delivering a more reliable service, but we also want to work with residents to help them understand how the new system will work for them.”
