Peter Donohoe completes his survey of Grieg’s Lyric Pieces, and includes the Ballade, Op. 24 for good measure. Two discs for the price of one!

Born in Bergen in 1843, Grieg is widely regarded as Norway’s ‘National Composer’. He wrote for the piano throughout his career, but, with one exception, eschewed the German sonata in favour of miniatures, which he named Lyriske stykker (Lyric Pieces).

Often influenced by the folk music of his native Norway, these works were published in ten volumes. Rather than recording them sequentially, Peter Donohoe has arranged the pieces in an order of his own choosing.

Violin playing today has its roots in the Italian style of players such as Nicola Matteis. Duo Dorado explore a wide range of his music (and that of Matteis Jr) that helped draw taste in restoration London from the French to the Italian style.

"Following our exploration of violin sonatas by Finger, immersing ourselves in the music of his London contemporaries was a logical next step. Although not wholly unknown nowadays, both Matteis Senior and his son lack the full recognition that they deserve...Determined to put this to rights, we spent innumerable hours exploring their music, spellbound by their vibrant and ever-varying musical worlds." - Hazel Brooks/Duo Dorado
