Wishing you a Happy Easter!
What a story there is behind these three words 'He is risen'.
Easter Sunday...He is risen!
On Friday we ended our post with Jesus’ words from John 19:30 “It is finished”. Matthew 27 records what happened next. After Jesus’ death His body was buried in a tomb, sealed by a large stone and Pilate made sure the tomb was protected by posting a guard.
Day two passes by bringing us to the third day upon which Jesus’ words were fulfilled. The tomb was found to be empty and the Angel of the Lord declared “He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.” Matthew 28:6.
The resurrection is central to the Christian faith.
Why is it so important that He is risen?
Well, following Adam & Eve’s choice to disobey God, death entered and Mankind was left with a sin problem that could not be ignored by a just God and so there was a price to be paid. Jesus being sinless met the requirements of a perfect sacrifice as required by the law God established through Moses to atone for sin. He chose to take upon Himself the punishment for our sin so that we could go free. Some call it the great exchange!
Before Jesus came and died for us, the priests would repeat sacrifices to temporarily atone for sin which required the shedding of the blood of a perfect sacrifice. Jesus was our perfect sacrifice, He died, rose again, defeated death and became our High Priest forever, reconciling man back to God. The work is complete, “It is finished!” and the way back is open to all who will accept and believe.
This is for you too.
