SELBY ICL FIRE: An update.

A fire that occurred at chemical plant, ICL, in Selby on Thursday, July 31, was extinguished in a matter of hours by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, witnesses have said.

The response from firefighters was described as "incredible" by one witness, who praised the rescue service for its swift action.

We caught up with officials from Sleepsafe Selby and Selby Superbowl - both of which were evacuated following reports of the fire shortly after 4:30pm.

Officials say both are now safely operating from their premises, with residents of Sleepsafe Selby able to return to the Bawtry Road site the same evening.

A spokesperson for Selby Superbowl added: "Owing to the nature of the report, we quickly shut our doors and safely evacuated everyone - calling those with bookings as soon as we could.

"After hearing that the ICL building had been extinguished, we were able to return the next day."

Fatal collision appeal on the A19 at Riccall near Selby 🚔

We are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a fatal collision which occurred on the A19 at Riccall, at the northbound junction with York Road.

It happened yesterday (Friday 1 August 2025) at around 10.30am.

A white DAF skip lorry vehicle collided with a black Nissan Juke which was joining the A19 from York Road.

Sadly, the driver of the Juke, 81-year-old John Michael Duggan from Riccall, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance with serious injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later.

His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. They are being supported by specially trained officers.

The driver of the DAF skip lorry, a 42-year-old man from York, was arrested at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

The road was closed for several hours to allow officers to investigate the scene, and the vehicles involved to be safely recovered.

We are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, anyone who may have seen the vehicles prior to the collision, or anyone with relevant dashcam footage, to contact us.

If you can help, please email [email protected]. Alternatively, you can call North Yorkshire Police on 101.

Some sad news to share 👇

Police were called to a serious collision around 3.30pm on Tuesday 29 July on the A19 at Chapel Haddesley.

It involved a silver Jaguar car with a single occupant - sadly the 81-year-old male driver passed away shortly after arriving at hospital via ambulance. His next of kin is being supported.

The scene was closed to traffic with diversions to allow the emergency services to work safely at the scene. The road reopened just before 10pm.

Thank you to the public who stopped to try and help the driver, and for all who came forward as witnesses.

If you witnessed the incident, and are yet to contact us, please email [email protected] or call 101 and ask for Mike Halstead.
