Focus Stacking with Helicon Focus in Spider Macro Photography

In spider macro photography, achieving full depth of field is notoriously difficult due to the extremely shallow focus at high magnifications. A spider’s eyes, legs, fangs, and hairs may all lie on different focal planes, making it impossible to capture everything sharply in a single frame. This is where focus stacking with Helicon Focus becomes essential.

Photographers typically capture a series of images at slight focus intervals—often using a focus rail or in-camera bracketing—to cover the intricate structures of the spider. These images are then processed in Helicon Focus, which combines only the sharpest parts of each frame into one crisp, detailed composite. This allows the fine textures of the spider's body, eyes, and webbing to be rendered with stunning clarity and three-dimensionality.

Helicon Focus is especially useful for spiders because it handles the complex contours and fine hairs without introducing excessive artifacts. Method B often works best for organic surfaces like spider skin and hairs, while retouching tools help refine any problem areas such as overlapping legs or translucent web strands.
