With new owners at The Golden Lion to impress, there was all to play for at last week's Magor Open Mic to justify it's continued existence.
Luckily, a great debut performance with some seriously edgy rock vocals from Luke Fable definitely scored us some points with George, the new landlord. So much in fact that Luke now has been booked to play a gig at the pub on Sunday 27th September 5.30pm.
Here's a clip of Luke in action. Hang on a minute ... we didn't know that "Believe" by Cher was a rock song? It is now!

If you fancy a little tipple of Honey Rum (please consume music responsibly!) - the duo are playing live at The Golden Lion , Magor NP26 3HY later today at 5.30pm.

Who are Honey Rum? Acoustic covers with 2 guitars/2 vocals and some very well thought out arrangements. I hope they slip in a couple of their originals too. Great to see some of the artists that attend our Magor Open Mic landing a gig at the pub.

Happy 30th Anniversary to this track "Forever Feeling" - originally recorded back in 1996 at Merlyn's Cave Studio in Malvern Wells run by Steve "The Wise Fly" Jay.
Although it did get a rework at Munroe Studios down in London a few years later under the watchful eye of producer Roger Benou, you can't beat the Italo-House inspired piano intro of the original version.
How did we get that sound? It came from a Roland JV-30 Synth "Piano 3" patch with a tasty helping of ping-pong delay, being sequenced by Cubase running on an Atari ST, recorded to a Studer 24 Track tape machine. The latest "Computer MIDI Sequencing" technology allowed us to prepare a lot of the synth parts at home, before going to the studio with Floppy Disc in hand, saving lots of money on studio time.
Would really love to produce at 2026 version to bring it to a new audience!

You may remember Dylan Hannan from our previous incarnation of Magor Open Mic a few years ago, always got a great response (particularly that night when the entire staff of Donnie's Coffee Shop came in). He always plays a lot of 90's songs (The Verve, Oasis) that oldies like us (and Chris Sadler who runs the PA) remember from the first time around! Dylan is now part of FreeFall. UK one of South Wales's fast rising indie rock bands - they've just recorded their new track "Jenny" at Foel Studio (that has a lovely great big mixing desk like the ones we used to use when we were in a band back in the 80's).

Magor Open Mic returns to The Golden Lion this Wednesday (16th September) 8.30pm. Let us know if you'd like to play! Full PA provided.

Magor Open Mic UPDATE. As of today The Golden Lion has new management. Since we couldn't assume they'd want to keep an Open Mic running, we've been down in person earlier today for a chat. Some promising news, they've agreed to a trial night on Wednesday 16th September.

A trial means what it says. Turnout, both performers and audience, decides what happens after that.

Big thanks for all the support you've given the Magor Open Mic over the last 2 months.

The day before the last Magor Open Mic we heard the sad news about the passing of country music legend Dolly Parton. Newcomer to Magor Open Mic, Sian, gave us a lovely fitting tribute in the form of her 1971 classic "Coat Of Many Colours". Sian had to leave early for work the next day so we didn't manage to get her details to be able to tag her, so if you know Sian, or even better, you *are* Sian, tag away! EDIT - thanks to Paula, we now know this is Sian from acoustic duo Still Willin’ - Acoustic Country Duo.

Today is not just Friday, it's Bandcamp Friday. What's that? Well, for one day, Bandcamp waive their revenue share, so money goes straight to artists and labels instead of the platform.

So, just to pluck an example out of the air, if you were to head over to https://litesundae.bandcamp.com/ you would find Lite Sundae's last single, "You'll Be Mine" (produced by InCompany Multimedia no less). And if you liked what you heard, you could grab it today while the extra cut reaches the band.
