As the railway world celebrates 200 years of railways in 2025 it’s easy to argue that the British Railways steam era was the golden age of those two centuries.
The May issue of Steam World looks to underline that proposition with a cracking edition. Just the magnificent pictures on offer would do the job:
Editor Chris Leigh looks at the legacy of Isambard Kingdom Brunel whose influence started just 10 years after the birth of railways.
Bob Gwynne continues his series on railway bridges the history of which also began 200 years ago.
Photographer David Rostance catches the last days of steam with his roving lens.
And the team have found a hidden gem in the Steam World article files – legendry engineman, the late Bert Ho**er, remembering what it was like to work on the railways during wartime.
All these are illustrated with excellent photography in fact it is probably our best ever photographic issue. Don’t miss it - buy in store or online today https://bit.ly/STWOMay25
