Join local documentary photographer Ellie Waters on 18 July at 11am for a free guided Heritage Photo Walk, exploring the fascinating stories, landmarks and green spaces that have shaped Rochdale's history.

Wander through the Broadfield Park Slopes, taking in historic surroundings including St Chad's Church, Rochdale Town Hall, the Church Steps and Broadfield Park itself.

A Historic Path Restored

One of Rochdale’s most treasured historic landmarks is once again coming back to life. It is wonderful to see the famous 122 Steps leading to St Chad’s Church almost fully restored, ensuring this remarkable piece of the town’s heritage can be enjoyed for generations to come.

The staircase began as just 33 steps in the twelfth century before being extended in 1660 to its present 122, using stone quarried from Blackstone Edge. For more than eight centuries, these weathered stones have carried the footsteps of worshippers, townsfolk and visitors alike.

Perhaps their most poignant role was as the final journey to “God’s Acre”—the ancient churchyard of St Chad’s. For generations, mourning families climbed these steps in quiet reflection before scattering sprigs of rue and rosemary, symbols of remembrance, love and fidelity, as a final farewell to those they had lost.

Today, the restored steps are more than a route to St Chad’s Church. They are a living link to Rochdale’s past, a reminder of the traditions that shaped our community, and a testament to the importance of preserving the places that tell our town’s story.
