Building on her MasterChef success, opened her first restaurant, Lakaz Maman Mauritian Street Kitchen, in Southampton, UK, in April 2016. Named after the Creole phrase for “Mum’s House,” the restaurant pays tribute to the inspiration behind her culinary journey—her family roots. Lakaz Maman quickly became Southampton’s go-to spot for street food, offering a modern twist on traditional Mauritian flavors and celebrating the rich heritage of this African island nation.
In 2020, Lakaz Maman received its first broadsheet review in The Telegraph, where food critic Keith Miller described it as “very heaven.” The restaurant, led by an all-female management team—a rarity in the hospitality industry—reflects Shelina’s commitment to championing equality and diversity in the workplace.
Lakaz Maman has also earned significant recognition, including TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Awards in 2021 and 2022, ranking it among the top 10% of restaurants worldwide, and OpenTable’s Diners’ Choice Awards in both years.
