🚨 South Yorkshire Police join the national crackdown on knife crime. 🔪

From May 19th to May 25th, the force is leading a week-long operation as part of the National Operation Sceptre to tackle knife crime and keep communities safe.

Detective Superintendent David Cowley, the force lead for knife crime, said:
“Anyone who carries a knife is putting themselves and others in danger. We know too well the devastating impact these crimes have on families and communities.”

💚 Yorkshire charity Tics and Tourette’s Information Centre (T.I.C.) is raising awareness this Tourette’s Awareness Month. 💚

T.I.C. is using the month to launch a major new education campaign focused on how to better support people living with Tourette’s Syndrome.

Yasmin Bartle, Support Service Manager at T.I.C., said:
“We have seen more people become aware of the name Tourette’s syndrome. However, we have seen very little in the way of people understanding what Tourette’s syndrome actually is or can look like.”

🎉 History made in Sheffield!

Councillor Safiya Saeed has become Sheffield’s 128th Lord Mayor and the city’s first Black woman wearing a hijab to hold the role.

🇸🇴 Originally from Somaliland, Cllr Saeed is a single mother of five and the founder of youth charity Reach Up Youth.

She said: “I stand before you today in great pride and joy... I want every voice, no matter how quiet, to feel heard in the heart of this city.”

🚨 The NHS is calling on Sheffield residents to take part in life-saving research.

As part of International Clinical Trials Day, people aged 18+ are invited to join the free “Be Part of Research” programme, no medical experience needed.

🧫 At Weston Park’s May Fayre, NHS staff ran mock trials and hands-on lab demos to boost awareness. A podcast answering public questions is coming this July.

A groundbreaking UK trial involving the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has shown that a second stem cell transplant could extend remission by 7 months for those with relapsed myeloma.

🧪 Patient Shirley Stewart says: “It’s given me the chance to see my children through adulthood.”

The ACCoRd trial, led by the University of Leeds and backed by Cancer Research UK, offers a new path for those well enough to undergo a second transplant.

⚽ Did football really start in Sheffield?

Scottish historian and founder of the Scottish Football Museum, Ged O’Brien, says no, calling claims by Sheffield charity ‘The Home of Football’ “flagrant nonsense.”

In an interview with ShefNews, O’Brien argues that Scotland’s role in football history has been overlooked, calling it a result of “cultural imperialism.”

“I would be okay with the idea that Sheffield is the home of Football in England, but I will not be okay with his claim anywhere in England invented it”.

🎶 As part of the South Yorkshire Organ Festival, Sheffield Cathedral is demystifying the instrument , with demonstrations, live music and a special drop-in event this Saturday (25 May) from 2–3.30pm.

Cathedral organist James Mitchell says it’s about making the organ accessible: “We’re bringing the organ out to the front so you can see it and see everything that’s going on.”

🧴☀️ “Even people in their teens and twenties can get melanoma.”

Charlotte Killeya, 45, from Ranmoor, is living with stage four skin cancer and she’s using her voice to campaign for better sun safety education in Sheffield.

Her message is now on a digital billboard in Sheffield City Centre, urging people to wear sunscreen and check their skin.

🏡 “It’s an investment in public health, economic prosperity and environmental sustainability.”

Sheffield has joined over 100 local authorities calling on the Government to fund a £12 billion Green and Decent Homes Programme.

The campaign aims to modernise ageing council housing, cut NHS costs and create green jobs, with Sheffield managing more than 38,000 homes across the city.

Councillor Douglas Johnson said the government must support “the warm, safe, decent homes we all want to see.”

🌸 From Barnsley to Chelsea 🌸

Steven Hickman is celebrating 40 years of family gardening by aiming for gold at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show – again.

The Barnsley grower and his family at Hoyland Plant Centre specialise in Agapanthus and have already won multiple gold medals. Their 2025 display pays tribute to local brass band history with flowers blooming from musical instruments once played by Steve and his father.

He said: “We started with nothing but a field. Now we’re here.”

“I thought my world was ending.”

Sheffield medical student Ciara Parker lived with undiagnosed coeliac disease for 10 years and says she became “desensitised” to the constant pain and fatigue.

Now, during Coeliac Awareness Month, she and local blogger Helen Armstrong are raising awareness about the impact of late diagnosis and the daily struggle of living gluten-free.
