Summer summiting ☀️

Long days and (sometimes) good conditions make this the best time for peak-bagging, but our best-selling hillwalkers guide, The Munros, helps you plan journeys which go well beyond just ticking off the summits, exploring the best routes to link up these iconic peaks. Our aim with this guide is that whether you’re aiming to summit as many tops as possible, or create your own exciting variations, you’ve got the tools do so and fully explore Scotland’s landscapes.

Our recently revised hillwalking guide, The Cairngorms and North-East Scotland, recently sold out its initial print run! To celebrate our reprint arriving, here’s a write up of a journey Rob recently undertook with his eight-year-old daughter into Glen Feshie, where they used the guide to help her plan her very first wild camping adventure.

Taking advantage of current conditions, after a quick school run in Inverness, Rob and Rory managed to get out to the north-west to climb Groovin’ High on the Far East Wall of Beinn Eighe. This popular E1 features three pitches of fabulous quartzite on the right hand side of the buttress, following a series of
grooves throughout. Well protected and positive holds were the prefer of the day, all set against the stunning backdrop of Coire Mhic Fhearchair.

Find routes on Beinn Eighe in Scottish Rock Climbs (Wired), Northern Highlands South and Rockfax Digital.

It was a busy day on Càrn Dearg Buttress on Ben Nevis last weekend with teams on Torro (E2), The Bat (E2) and Titan’s Wall (E3).

Rob and Alex climbed The Bat. This classic route was first climbed in 1959 by Dougal Haston and Robin Smith and was named after the giant swooping falls taken on the first ascent. Thankfully, their ascent avoided any swooping falls and the team had a great day out taking in the full height of the buttress before descending Ledge Route. The dry weather is set to continue – which mountain classics are on your tick list?

Whether you were route ticking, peak bagging or simply sun basking, we hope like us you got to make the most of the incredible weather that kicked off the spring/summer season. Here’s a few from a few days in Knoydart with our hill list guides The Munros and The Corbetts, where the Rough Bounds were decidedly less rough than usual with dry ground, no wind and endless blue skies ☀️

Right now we’re thankful for a bit of much needed rain, but here’s hoping for more again soon.

Head to the shop to start planning for the next sunny spell’s adventures.

It’s spring and we’re starting to dust off the summer books and enjoy some longer days again ⛰️

Some scenes from a very good time cutting about An Ruadh Stac last week, found in Highland Scrambles North. A steep sided Corbett with glittering quartzite slabs and distinct Alpine feel as soon as you emerge on to Bealach a Coire Garbh below. It’s easy to forget about the Glen Carron hills on your way through to Torridon, Kintail and the Hebrides, but this small section packs a mighty geological punch!

There are plenty more adventures to be found in this area in Highland Scrambles North - head to the shop for more ☀️

Looking further ahead in 2025 ✨

A little update from to say we have at least three new SMC guidebooks in production, covering scrambling, climbing, and ski mountaineering. These are expected to be released over the course of the year.

We’ll keep you updated and will share more information soon. We also have a healthy pipeline of guidebooks planned for the coming years, with contributors hard at work on projects for both summer and winter. Guidebooks are incredibly complex to produce, so we’re hugely grateful to our authors and everyone providing pictures and information. These books truly are a team effort!

We can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on, and to find out more about what’s going on over at the Press, check out the What’s in store article on the news section of our website 🗻

Winter is back! What a welcome to 2025 ❄

With widespread conditions it's a great time to take advantage and explore out away from the honeypots – have a gander through Scottish Winter Climbs West or Scottish Winter Climbs for inspiration.
