Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the capture of Clarissa, the record 44lb carp landed by Richard Walker from the now legendary Redmire Pool.
At the time it was viewed as the culmination of catching specimen sized carp by design, although as we now know, almost three quarters of a century later, it was really just the beginning.
Dick Walker undoubtedly rates as one of the most influential carp anglers of all time. Not just for his capture of the record fish, but also for the design of the the tackle (mkiv rod, heron bite alarm and collapsible landing net, to name but three) required to target them.
In 1951, along with Denys Watkins Pitchford and Maurice Ingham, Walker formed the Carp Catchers Club. A group dedicated to sharing ideas in how to target truly giant fish, in an era where only a handful over 10lb were banked in any given season.
It was fellow C.C.C member Dick Kefford who was instrumental in gaining Walker access to Redmire that ultimately led to that fateful day in September 1952.
Although Dick Kefford never caught any of the Redmire monsters, his memory lives on in the swim bearing his name (Keffords Pitch) and this poem that he wrote as a tribute to the Carp Catchers Club.

The Head of the Team
Of highest esteem
Dick Walker led the way.
Peter Thomas, Walker's fishing companion, he
Followed Dick's techniques faithfully.
Denys Watkins Pitchford, alias 'BB'
Wrote descriptive prose most beautifully.
Maurice Ingham, warden at 'Woldale',
His catching carp could hardly fail.
John Norman of Nottingham showed to me
the ropes' and carp at Mapperley.
Bernard Venables, anglers' welfare wishing,
Devised and portrayed 'Mr Crabtree goes Fishing '
Gerry Berth Jones at Wadhurst Park
With common-scaled carp did make his mark.
The late Jack Smith could mainly reap
His just rewards at 'Lackey's Leap'.
Harry Grief of Dagenham fame
Caught twenty pounders despite his name!
Fred J. Taylor is still going strong.
What with fishing and cooking he can hardly do wrong!
Last am I, who wished
Not for record carp, but fished
Whenever work gave leave for pleasure,
From banks providing constant pleasure.

What's The Most Unusual Bait That You've Caught Fish On?
We are used to seeing catch reports for fish caught on boilies or pellets, which made this carp caught on blackberries stand out as a little bit different.
What is the strangest bait that you've caught with?

We’ve been sent a cracking couple of photos – and what a capture this is! 🎣 While away on a short family holiday, Lee Macdonald landed this stunning 31lb 12oz ghostie from White Acres Fishery in Newquay.
The fish fell to Mud Pig’s "Nutty Pig", part of Lee’s very own range of super-fresh baits. What a way to spend a holiday! 👏🐷✨
