Merging the emotive sweep of Post-Rock with the grit of Metal, Trip-Hop’s cinematic undercurrent, and the intricate layering of Electronic music, September Again have been quietly rewriting the rulebook since emerging from the French underground. What began as an experimental project in 2012 took full flight by 2015, evolving into a genre-fluid collective that thrives on contrast and craft.
Their 2017 debut, "Insomniac," followed the release of the single "Falls," and set the tone as immersive, brooding, and unafraid to blur boundaries. The band quickly drew comparisons to Archive, Deftones, Massive Attack, Incubus, and Thrice — yet their sound carried its own distinct signature: equal parts tension and release, melody and menace.
Refusing to coast on acclaim, September Again doubled down on ambition with 2020’s "From Nothing to Nowhere" — an expansive, emotionally charged album that resonated deeply, even as the pandemic gripped the globe. Instead of retreating, the band hit the road across France, turning live shows into a visceral experience and cultivating a fiercely loyal following.
Now, with momentum building, they return with "Mirrors," featured below, a visually arresting new single that deepens their exploration of identity, perception, and emotional duality. It follows "Distorted and Sweet," showcased here in May, and offers a tantalising glimpse into their forthcoming third album — set to be their most ambitious yet.
In a recent interview, I asked them what inspired the concept behind the song and video, they collectively told me:
"It was the internal struggle of facing parts of ourselves we often suppress or ignore. It reflects on identity, fear, and the quiet effort to stay connected to who we truly are. In the video, burying a former self symbolises shedding outdated versions of identity. It’s a metaphor for growth—letting go of what no longer serves us to return stronger, more authentic. At its core, it’s not about collapse, but the power of transformation."
And that brings me nicely to the featured single - "Mirrors."
This dark and atmospheric single leans into emotional weight rather than spectacle, this track unravels like a confessional whispered through smoke. Built on tension and restraint, it moves with purpose—never rushing, always pulling you deeper. The production is rich yet controlled, allowing the emotional undercurrents to breathe. Vocally, it’s raw and human, carrying a sense of reckoning. There’s a quiet intensity here, a reflection on failure, fragility, and the slow reconstruction of the ones self.
Poised for a wider breakthrough, September Again stands ready to transcend scenes and borders — a band no longer content with the underground, but aiming directly at the horizon.
To close, this single and forthcoming album won’t gather dust in any collection, and will keep heads bouncing and feet tapping from sofa to stage. So why not clear a space, and give September Again a try for 2025.
