Alfred Gangata, other top top DPP gurus Storm Masintha Sunday

The Mighty Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is set to stage a major political show of strength this Sunday, July 13, 2025, as top party officials descend on Masintha Ground in Lilongwe for a mega rally.

Leading the delegation will be the party’s Vice President for Central Region, Alfred Gangata, who has recently gained traction for rallying massive support in what is traditionally seen as the political stronghold of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Gangata and his team are campaigning for former president and DPP leader Professor Peter Mutharika ahead of the September elections.

With recent rallies drawing impressive crowds, the DPP claims it is successfully shaking MCP's grip on the Central Region.

“The ground is no longer theirs alone — we are conquering it,” a party insider said, signaling growing confidence within DPP ranks.

Other notable speakers at the rally will include Secretary General Peter Mukhito, National Youth Director Norman Chisale, Regional Governor David Kambalame and several parliamentarians including Ben Phiri and Chimwemwe Chipungu.

The event, scheduled to start at 1:30PM, is themed "APM – A Return to Proven Leadership", as the party pushes for Mutharika’s political comeback.

With momentum building, the DPP hopes Sunday’s rally will solidify its re-emergence in the Central Region’s political arena.

Vendors in Mzuzu have cautioned politicians against sowing divisions among them by sponsoring violence during protests.

Chairperson of the vendors Alexander Sikwese claim they have uncovered a syndicate in which some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) politicians allegedly paid young people to disrupt their recent peaceful demonstration.

“Imagine some of these young people were telling their friends that they were given money to disrupt the protests and mentioning Minister of Trade, Vitumbiko Mumba of being behind this as a way of denting his image. This is a battle within MCP and they are connecting it to us ,” Sikwese said.

MCP through its deputy publicity secretary Ken Msonda refused commenting on the matter.

MCP'S STRONGMAN FUNDS ZIGAWENGA - WANTS TO SMEAR MUMBA

The MCP strong-man funded a team of vagabonds and armed them with panga knives in order to stop the demonstrations that were organised by vendors. Interestingly these demonstrations were organised and funded by the same people. To put an ice cream on their cake, they have funded the vendors to claim that it was Eng. Vitumbiko A.Z. Mumba who funded the panga wielding vagabonds. Some within the team have started disclosing after their demands are not being met.

Currently, Eng. Mumba is in Japan and two days ago announced his resignation from MCP's NEC. He cited small-mega battles and small-mega lies by senior NEC Members as the reasons behind his resignation. Coincidentally, Richard Chimwendo Banda is famed for having said small-mega farms.

Mumba went on to say he doesn't have time for trivia and petty primitive politics. He might have been referring to things like these where people engage vendors in order to exploit them.

Mumba stresses that the time for only helping communities with coffins when they are bereaved is over, and it’s time for promoting development through such initiatives which empower communities economically.

MUREF is a constituency-based community financing initiative aimed at empowering women and youths through group-based microloans to support small businesses and small-scale farming ventures in the Mzimba Central constituency, according to Mumba.

While there is a lot of excitement that Salima Sugar Company has started crushing sugar, Transporters are crying foul. They tendered for transportation contracts and were given a nod. But interestingly they are surprised that nothing has happened today and we're wondering who will be transporting the sugar.

Instead, they have seen the attached social media post by Frank Banda who claims to have sent 20 trucks. They are wondering how he got the contract. Some have decried that this man likes taking trucks from the rank without proper contracts.

DPP Under Fire for ‘Kangaroo Court’ Decision in Mulanje Central Primary Elections

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is facing mounting criticism following its controversial decision to declare Damson Chelewani the winner of the Mulanje Central primary elections—despite unresolved disputes and widespread allegations of electoral malpractice.

In a letter dated 18th May 2025, signed by DPP Director of Elections Jean Mathanga, the party stated that its internal dispute resolution committee had found no evidence of violence, intimidation, or misconduct and thus resolved to confirm Chelewani as the rightful winner.

However, critics have blasted the process as lacking credibility and fairness, with some branding it a “kangaroo court” designed to validate a predetermined outcome.

Several aspirants, including Rhoda Gadama Misomali, formally raised concerns about the credibility of the elections, prompting the DPP to convene a meeting on 16th May to assess the matter.

But rather than addressing the core issues raised in writing by the complainants, the committee allegedly sidestepped them entirely.

Sources close to the process say the meeting was marred by bias and procedural flaws.

The so-called dispute resolution hearing reportedly entertained manipulated video evidence submitted by Chelewani—footage whose timeline could not be independently verified.

More alarmingly, presiding officers, whose input was critical to ensuring transparency, were not invited to the meeting.

Adding to the controversy, other aspirants were not given the opportunity to present their evidence, effectively silencing key voices and undermining the principles of fair hearing.

The entire process, according to insiders, appeared rushed and choreographed, raising serious questions about the party's commitment to democratic practices.

“There has been no clear logic provided behind the declaration of a winner,” a disgruntled party insider said.

“It appears the leadership was more focused on rubber-stamping a predetermined outcome than ensuring a fair and democratic process.”

The backlash reached a tipping point when two high-ranking DPP officials—Elizabeth John, Governor for Mulanje District, and Vasco Mondiwa, Governor for the Central Region—resigned in protest. In their joint letter, the pair condemned the party’s refusal to investigate legitimate complaints and questioned the rationale behind Chelewani’s endorsement.

“We cannot be part of a process that tramples on internal democracy and disregards the voice of its own members,” they wrote.

Their resignations, coupled with growing public discontent, have dealt a significant blow to the DPP’s credibility ahead of the 2025 general elections. Critics are now calling on the party to revisit the disputed primary with full transparency, impartiality, and genuine respect for democratic norms.

Without such measures, observers warn, the DPP risks alienating its base and undermining confidence in its leadership at a critical moment in Malawi’s political landscape.

Northern Region MCP leaders tells authorities to leave Mzimba Central, Nkhata Bay CentralConstituencies alone

Five out of six district chairpersons for the North-South Region of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have intervened calling for peaceful and inclusive elections in two constituencies where primary elections have been disputed.

The two constituencies are Mzimba Central and Nkhata Bay Central.

Speaking at a press briefing in Mzuzu on Sunday, the chairpersons said for example the primary elections in Mzimba Central Constituency had massive irregularities as such they are void.

“The MCP currently uses a secret ballot system, but in that case, voters stood behind their preferred candidate. Additionally, some candidates and delegates were not present and no election observers from the region were present. These are among the reasons we say the election did not take place,” said Mathews Shaba Euthini District Secretary.

They have since agreed to go back to the two constituencies to iron out the challenges that border around the Electoral College this week.

Raphael Mhone and Changa Kaunda are battling for the Nkhata Bay Central constituency while Kuseli Mkandawire and Vitumbiko Mumba are fighting for the Mzimba Central constituency.
