President Lazarus Chakwera has said the Ntcheu–Tsangano Road is vital for the socio-economic development of the country.

He made the remarks on Wednesday during a whistle-stop tour at Kambilonjo Trading Centre in Ntcheu’s Dzonzi-Mvai Constituency.

“Tsangano is a food basket for Ntcheu, Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, and the country at large. The Ntcheu–Tsangano Road is the main route that supports this production, making it crucial for the nation’s economic development,” said Chakwera.

The President added that with the vast agricultural output from the area, government will support the establishment of factories to promote value addition on crops such as tomatoes, onions, and potatoes.

Shadow MCP Member of Parliament for Dzonzi-Mvai, Mwayi Kamuyambeni, described the people of Tsangano as hardworking farmers who depend on year-round farming rather than handouts.

In his remarks, Traditional Authority Mpando thanked the President for supporting farmers in his area with affordable agricultural inputs.

He noted that people in his area cultivate crops three times a year and praised the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) for disbursing MK1.1 billion to farmers in the constituency.

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has cracked down on SIMSO Oil and Transport Company, a firm linked to prominent businessman and cleric Bishop Abraham Simama, for hoarding over 200,000 litres of petrol at its depot while its fuel stations remained dry.

According to a MERA statement released Wednesday, regulatory inspections revealed that SIMSO Oil was withholding massive fuel stocks without justification, at a time when Malawi is battling persistent fuel shortages.

“This conduct undermines national efforts to stabilize fuel supply across the country,” MERA said, adding that the regulator has ordered SIMSO to immediately release and distribute the withheld fuel to its service stations.

In a decisive move, MERA also directed that no fuel importer or Oil Marketing Company should allocate any stock to SIMSO Oil until further notice.

SIMSO’s fuel stations, found in key locations across the country, have been dry in recent days—raising public frustration amid worsening shortages.

The latest sanction marks a serious regulatory blow for the company, which has grown into a major player in the fuel distribution market and is reportedly tied to the influential Simama business empire.

It is interesting to note that when there was sugar shortage on the market, a Simso truck was caught by Ministry of Trade and Industry officials on suspicion of trying to smuggle sugar. This was a few days before a Simama shop was closed in Area 24 for selling sugar illegally at mid night.

Blantyre Shutdown as DPP Unveils Master Manifesto at Njamba

The city of Blantyre is set for a political spectacle this Sunday as Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, his running mate Dr. Jane Ansah, and incoming Second Vice President Enoch Chihana lead the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in launching its 2025 Manifesto and National Campaign at Njamba Freedom Park.

In the morning, the pair while first unvail the manifesto at Mount Soche Hotel.

Dubbed the "mother of all political rallies," the event is expected to bring the commercial capital to a standstill as thousands of DPP supporters—dressed in party blue—flock to the iconic venue.

“It’s not just a rally—it’s a movement. A rescue mission. The blue wave is coming,” a senior party official told reporters on Thursday.

The DPP is promising to unveil what insiders call a “master manifesto,” focusing on economic recovery, job creation, youth empowerment and restoring governance and rule of law.

Mutharika, who is seeking a return to the presidency after his 2020 electoral defeat, is reportedly already in Blantyre preparing for the launch—reading what close aides jokingly refer to as his “war books.”

“This will be a historic day. A defining moment in the countdown to the September 16 elections,” said another source at DPP headquarters.

Excitement is already building online, with supporters urged to get their data bundles, eyes, and ears ready for what is being described as a “blue sea” of hope and revival.

The Njamba rally marks the official kickoff of DPP’s campaign trail, with the party aiming to reclaim government through what it calls a people-driven agenda.

City authorities and police are bracing for massive turnout and traffic disruptions, as DPP declares a “Blantyre shutdown” in anticipation of the crowd.

All eyes are now on Sunday. Will the blue wave deliver its promise? One thing is certain: Blantyre will turn blue.
