Speaking at a ‘Board of Peace’ panel in New York on Wednesday, Tony Blair dismissed the call for a “Free Palestine” as a slogan. His words expose a wider double standard: while he rightly argues that Ukrainians must be free to decide their own future, he treats Palestinian self-determination and human rights as negotiable in the name of Israel’s ‘security’ and ‘stability’.

The War on Terror, which Blair co-authored, made this selective approach sound respectable. It cast whole populations under suspicion for the crimes of armed groups and helped create fertile ground for authoritarianism and the resurgent far right. But freedom cannot remain secure in Europe - or anywhere - if denying it elsewhere is accepted as 'realpolitik'.

Israeli Transportation Minister Miri Regev addressed a conference organised by Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday - even though Israel officially continues to boycott the N**i-founded party.
Haaretz reported that Regev thanked FPÖ lawmaker Harald Vilimsky for supporting Israel and called for a joint struggle against “radical Islam,” once again illustrating how mutual Islamophobia enables historically antisemitic European movements to rebrand themselves as defenders of Jews and Western democracy.

The relationship forms part of a wider international far-right network in which Netanyahu’s ethnonationalist government is increasingly integral. Likud has joined the Patriots.eu alliance alongside the FPÖ, National Rally, Vox, Lega and Fidesz, while several of these parties have longstanding political or financial ties to Russia. Moscow has served as a partner, amplifier and authoritarian model, but support for Israel now provides another valuable source of legitimacy: a political fig leaf allowing extremist parties to obscure their histories and objectives without abandoning their supremacism and ethno-nationalism.

Russian state media, Assad propagandists and pro-Israel accounts are exploiting Syria’s legitimate fuel-price protests to spread disinformation and depict the country as collapsing without authoritarian rule. Russian state outlet RT falsely twisted one protester’s comparison with Assad-era prices into supposed support for Assad’s return, while prominent Assad propagandists Vanessa Beeley and Maram Susli falsely portrayed warning shots fired over demonstrators during one condemned incident as a nationwide campaign of shooting protesters. Pro-Israel accounts, meanwhile, have similarly celebrated the demonstrations as supposed evidence that the Syrian revolution has failed.

In reality, Syrians reject the false choice between remaining silent about problems and returning to Assadist rule, partition or foreign control. “We are solving our own issues with our own government,” Aleppo businessman and revolutionary Mohammed Masri told Radio Free Syria, stressing that Assad loyalists and other authoritarians “will never control Syria again.”

Protests have spread across Syria after the government raised diesel prices by 40% and petrol by up to 28%, threatening further increases in transport, food and other essential costs. Demonstrators have demanded the dismissal of Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir, whom parliament has summoned to a hearing on Thursday. Much of the anger also centres on government spending, with impoverished Syrians questioning why they must bear further austerity while officials travel in conspicuous motorcades of large, expensive vehicles.

The government inherited an economy and energy system devastated by Assad and his allies, while soaring international prices, regional conflict, reduced Russian supplies and maintenance at the Banias refinery have intensified the crisis. These constraints are real, but they do not answer the political question of how the burden should be distributed. Thursday’s hearing will test whether Syria’s parliament can turn legitimate public anger into concrete government action—although lasting recovery will also require extensive international investment and reconstruction assistance.

The Kremlin is already considering two possible venues for a 2027 Russia–US–Germany business forum at which Germany would be represented by the far-right AfD - only three days after Moscow first publicly proposed the event. Putin envoy Kirill Dmitriev told Russian state news agency TASS that one potential host is in the Middle East and another “close” to the region, claiming the initiative has received “incredibly powerful support” from Germany and the United States.

Israel has not been identified as a prospective host, although its ties with the countries and political forces involved make it one possibility among several Middle Eastern venues. The AfD has worked for years to cultivate Israeli support, while Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems is considering opening a components plant in Saxony-Anhalt following the party’s state-election victory. AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund welcomed defence production there while suggesting that military equipment could support his party’s planned deportation campaign—adding another disturbing dimension to the emerging alignment of Russian business interests, Trump’s America, and Israeli and European ethnonationalism.

Donald Trump has refused to say whether the United States would assist Britain in another Falklands conflict, while Yair Netanyahu has declared that the islands “belong to Argentina” and Kremlin mouthpiece Vladimir Solovyov has urged Russia to arm Argentina to “decisively defeat Britain.” Although these interventions do not prove a coordinated campaign, their cumulative effect is to encourage Javier Milei as he intensifies Argentina’s claim to the British-administered islands.

The convergence has a revealing historical precedent: Israel secretly supplied Argentina’s antisemitic military dictatorship with weapons during the 1982 Falklands War. Today, Benjamin Netanyahu attacks Britain through Islamophobic Great Replacement-style rhetoric, his son supports Milei’s territorial claim, Trump treats US support as conditional upon British obedience, and Russian state television promotes military action against Britain—exposing an international far-right alliance governed not by consistent principles, but by transactional power.

A former Assad-regime general based in Moscow reportedly directed a cross-border network that smuggled loyalists from Syria’s coast into Lebanon, where Hezbollah personnel trained them in weapons, explosives and drone warfare for planned attacks inside Syria. Lebanese authorities arrested five suspects, including former Air Force Intelligence colonel Manaf Ali Safi, and seized automatic weapons, sniper ri**es, grenades and explosives. Approximately 50 recruits are believed to have passed through the network.

The alleged coordinator, former Desert Hawks commander Major General Mohammad Jaber, is among the senior Assad figures now sheltered in Russia. No publicly available evidence yet proves that the Kremlin ordered the operation, but the coordination of an armed international network from tightly controlled Russian territory raises serious questions about Russian knowledge or acquiescence. The case suggests that the Assadist threat has become transnational, connecting former regime commanders in Moscow with Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon and recruits intended for deployment inside Syria.

Lebanese authorities have arrested five people suspected of belonging to a Hezbollah-linked network involving remnants of the Assad regime and planning attacks against Syrian government forces on the coast.

Investigators reportedly seized machine guns, sniper ri**es, grenades and explosives, and found that members had received Hezbollah training in Lebanon. The network was allegedly directed by former Assad-regime Major-General Mohammed Jaber, who is believed to be living in Moscow.

The plot was uncovered as Syria faces escalating Israeli attacks, incursions and abductions in the south. While the ultimate objectives of Israel and the Hezbollah–Assad network differ, their actions converge in efforts to weaken the Syrian state: Israeli operations consume Damascus’s resources and create instability that Assad loyalists and Hezbollah can exploit, while attacks by those networks further fragment Syria and provide Israel with additional pretexts for intervention.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has accused Russian- and Israeli-linked networks of joining the international far right in spreading racist disinformation surrounding July’s deadly migration crisis in Ceuta. Sánchez cited EU research identifying accounts that amplified false claims about Spanish migration policy before weaponising the resulting humanitarian catastrophe as evidence of a supposed migrant ‘invasion’.

The accusations provide further evidence of a broader Russo-Israeli convergence with the Western far right. Putin and Netanyahu have longstanding ties and coordinated militarily in Syria—an arrangement Syrian writers and activists repeatedly highlighted but much of the world ignored. The muted response from sections of the left suggests that, for some, the objection is not to fascism and racism themselves, but to which superpower benefits from them.

In an exclusive Radio Free Syria interview, the distinguished Syrian human-rights lawyer Anwar al-Bunni expresses optimism about post-Assad Syria, pointing to its growing civil society, newfound freedom of expression and a younger generation determined not to return to dictatorship. He nevertheless warns that the transitional period remains perilous, with corruption, insecurity, former war criminals inside the authorities and external threats—above all from Israel—placing the country’s future at risk.

Al-Bunni sharply criticises Syria’s current accountability process as a “transitional show” controlled by the justice minister rather than genuine transitional justice centred on victims. Drawing on decades spent defending political prisoners, five years in Assad’s prisons and his leading role in prosecuting regime officials in Europe, he insists that justice cannot be selective or used as an instrument of power: “I will always be on the victims’ side.”
