Founded in 1974 in New Jersey, Cheri Records produced just eleven releases between 1974 and 1982. On paper, a modest output — but dig a little deeper, and you’ll find a catalogue rich with creativity and soul. The quality and originality of the music reveal an exceptional legacy that continues to resonate today.

Let Me Down Easy: Echoes From Cheri Records brings together the most compelling tracks from the label’s catalogue, shining a light on an extraordinary story and proving that music — no matter how unassuming its origins — can transcend boundaries, influence generations, and inspire new sounds to come.

I’ve been in love with this record ever since I picked it up in a tiny market whilst on hols in Wales. The guy had a ‘jazz’ box consisting of about 30 LPs and this was one of them. Proof you can still find amazing records in unsuspecting places. Hasn’t left my DJ bag since.

Announcing 𝑳𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒆 𝑫𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝑬𝒂𝒔𝒚: 𝑬𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒊 𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒔

This is the story of how a tiny label from New Jersey changed the course of music history not once but twice.

Cheri Records was established in 1974 in New Jersey and produced a catalogue of just eleven releases between 1974 and 1982. Not much on the face of it. However, if you dig a little deeper, the quality released on Cheri Records reveals an exceptional legacy of groundbreaking music.

A true unsung legend that would go on to alter the course of musical history and intersect with a remarkable array of talented artists, bands and DJs. From Rare Pleasure; Sandy Barber; Julius Brockington; Boo Frazier; Patrick Adams; Tom Moulton; Larry Levan and MF Doom. Cheri’s influence even extends into the present, with DJ icons like David Morales, Dave Lee, Danny Krivit, and Colin Curtis continuing to champion its contributions.

This compilation brings together the most compelling tracks from the Cheri Records catalogue, shedding light on the label’s extraordinary story and underscoring the idea that music, no matter how unassuming its origins, can transcend boundaries and reshape, influence and inform music to come for future generations.

This collection also represents the start of a new series here on Miles Away, a series that will delve into the labels and studios that were responsible for leaving a lasting imprint on the musical world. We’ve named this series 𝑬𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎, and this compilation will be the first of many.

Just about a year ago to the day that we released our debut label compilation, Miles Away: ONE! Boy, time flies. Still amazing to hear that people are finding it, buying it and most of all enjoying it! ❤️❤️

It’s a good moment to mention that TWO is in the works and will be landing early 2026. Watch this space! 🪩🪩🫂

Amazing day at yesterday! 🌞

It’s incredibly humbling meeting the people who are following the label and buying our records regularly. It’s still completely surreal and without your continued support we wouldn’t be able to keep doing what we do. So, thank you!

Lovely to connect with all the other indie labels out there as well, who continue to put out and celebrate fantastic music. Special mentioned to and everyone else we managed to catch up with ❤️❤️

Miles Away are proud to introduce a brand-new, fresh out the bag, never before released piece of music to our catalogue.

In September 2024, DM’d us with a collection of instrumental covers he had created. Immediately drawn in, we loved both the musical approach to these covers and the fact he tastefully selected these tracks to cover. Following up, we asked Rob, an accomplished musician, if he had any original compositions in a similar style.

The result is “MONSTRO”, six instrumental slabs of jazz-funk heat! Made in Sheffield, listeners can expect spacey synths, silky electric pianos, and irresistible hooks. Think BADBADNOTGOOD meets Mildlife with a side plate of Herbie Hancock. From the kick-your-door-down energy of “Callisto Disco” to the slow-burning allure of “Heartacher” and optimistic sunny day feel of “Cherryade” to the fully grown earworm synth lines of “Bouquet Garni”.

The collection features two cover versions: Michael Miglio’s “Never Gonna Let You Go” and Rupa’s “Ayee Morshume Be-Reham Duniya.” Both are rare early-80s gems, wonderfully reimagined by Rob.

“MONSTRO” will be officially released on May 16th, 2025, with the track “Never Gonna Let You Go” now available as the first single. To celebrate the release of “MONSTRO”, Rob and his band will perform a special one-off show at in Sheffield on the May 16th. Tickets available now!

MUSIC MAKES ME HIGH 🙌🎵

A sentiment we can fully relate to! “Music Makes Me High” is the opening track on Salty Miller’s album 𝒜𝓁𝒷𝓊𝓂 #𝟣. A crossover-soul gem, the track sets the tone for an album that goes beyond the Beach Music conventions, drifting into the worlds of soul, r&b and jazz. Preview above! ☝️👆

Miles Away are proud to present the vinyl reissue of Salty Miller’s beach music gem, entitled “Album #1”

As sampled by

Originally released in 1980 in very limited quantities, under the unwieldy Beach Music Records of the Carolinas, the album blends soul, disco, and mid-tempo steppers. All perfectly suited to a day at the beach 🏖️🌊

Dreamt up after Miller had stepped away from the music industry, only to return years later, driven by a mix of disposable income and lingering creative regret. He assembling a cast of renowned musicians, including members of the legendary Beach Music combo The Embers and over the course of a decade recorded this album.

Steeped in local influences, oceanic soundscapes, and emotive string arrangements, Album #1 serves as both a love letter to Beach Music’s golden years and an outlier that pushed beyond its conventions. While many tracks celebrate the nostalgic Beach Music themes of love and joy, others take on a stormier, more introspective tone—offering a rare departure from the genre’s traditionally sun-soaked spirit.
