It was a familiar feeling for Bristol Rovers as they were plunged further into a League Two relegation battle after losing 1-0 to Cheltenham Town at the EV Charger Points Stadium.

Lots of shots and territory but no goals to show for it, Shaq Forde and Ruel Sotiriou omitted from squad, A shift to a 3-5-2, and defeat against Notts County would equal unwanted record - here's our verdict from the game

Last season was an extremely successful one for Bristol Rovers Women, who finished fourth in their first season at tier four of the English pyramid.

They also reached the fourth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup to play Women’s Super League (WSL) side, Aston Villa, away from home.

Rovers lost 9-0 to Villa, with the hosts putting out almost a full-strength lineup, including the likes of Rachel Daly, Gabi Nunes, and Jordan Nobbs.

“We got to the stadium and were just coming out to have a little check of the pitch. Rachel Daly walks out, Gabi Nunes - all of their superstars kind of start walking out. You get the team sheet and I'm just sat there going, ‘Oh, Jesus Christ’,” said manager Nathan Hallett-Young, who has been the first-team manager since the women’s setup was reformed back in 2019, while also working full-time as the operations manager for the Bristol Rovers Community Trust.

Since taking on the role six years ago, Hallett-Young has achieved three promotions, with last year’s FA Cup run drawing attention to the impressive work he has done.

With the game on Sunday taking place at The Memorial Stadium, he is keen to impress and knows the challenge, as Rovers face a Fulham side with significant resources and an unbeaten record in the South East section of the fourth tier.

Shaq Forde and Ruel Sotiriou were both left out of the squad after starting in the recent league games against Gillingham and Accrington Stanley.

Speaking about their absence from the Rovers squad, Darrell Clarke said: “No, not selected. Need more. Need more from the forward-thinking players. Need more from every single one of them. Need everybody to be training with the intensity that I demand. And if not, not in the squad. It's simple.

“Quite simple with me, you know, for me is that I can only mollycoddle players so long, and I'm not chucking players on the bus. I'll take accountability - I’ll do that, but what I won't do is, I won't mollycoddle players if they haven’t got the intensity right in our training, because the only way you get into form is by training right every single day, by body language, by attitude.

“And if they're not, I don't care who they are. They won't be in the squad. Well, you know, we'll reset Monday morning. There'll be another 18 bodies picked next Saturday, and we'll see who wants it.”

"Our supporters deserve a hell of a lot better than what we're giving up.”

Full-time: Cheltenham Town 1-0 Bristol Rovers

A seventh consecutive league defeat for the Gas. Tomkinson scored at the backpost for Cheltenham in the 70th minute, and Rovers struggled to break down Steve Cotterill's side.

The Gas are only two points above the relegation zone and have now dropped down to 20th in League Two.

Half-time: Cheltenham Town 0-0 Bristol Rovers

Both teams have had chances with Cavegn coming close on a couple of occasions for the Gas, while Ryan Broom shot wide from a short corner for the Robins.

Apart from that, chances have been limited in a nervy clash. The first goal will be vital here.
