The hit musical Chicago strutted into the Empire Theatre this week with a sizzling performance that had the audience on their feet. Starring Strictly’s Janette Manrara as the sharp-witted Roxie Hart and Daren Day as the charismatic, silver-tongued lawyer Billy Flynn, this production oozed glitz, glamour, and dark humor.
The real star of the evening, however, was the understudy Lucy-Anne Stacey, who stepped in last minute for Manrara. Stacey’s portrayal of Roxie was captivating, her voice soaring through the iconic tunes with ease, capturing the character’s ambition and desperation with authenticity. She was every bit as captivating as the original true-life murderesses of the 1920s.
The musicality between the orchestra and performers was seamless, delivering the show’s trademark jazz and razzle-dazzle. The choreography, especially in the opening number “All That Jazz,” was a masterclass in the sensual, cynical, and bold style of Bob Fosse, with the dance routines highlighting the performers’ skill and precision. The minimalist staging allowed the talent to truly shine, and the comical timing throughout was impeccable.
Djalenga Scott’s portrayal of Velma Kelly was another highlight, with her statuesque presence and breathtaking voice delivering a performance as memorable as the character herself. Day’s performance as Flynn was charismatic and sharp, adding the perfect touch of charm and bravado.
Overall, this Chicago was a dazzling, thrilling night out, full of fire, wit, and star power. A show not to be missed! Show runs until 9th August Tickets available from www.articles.com
