Stevenage Hockey Club – Summer Weekly Roundup

With matches taking place across the Letchworth and Hitchin Summer Leagues, it was another exciting week on the pitch for Stevenage Hockey Club summer squads.

Letchworth Summer League
Tuesday 10th June – Double Duty for Stevenage
Two of our teams were in action on Tuesday evening at Letchworth.
Stevenage Summer 1 were up against the Letchworth Jaguars at 19:30. Despite a spirited performance, they went down 3–1, with the hosts proving just a bit too strong on the night.
Just an hour later at 20:30, Stevenage Summer 3 took to the pitch against the Letchworth Pumas and secured a confident 2–0 win. A composed performance throughout ensured all three points returned to Stevenage.
Thursday 12th June – A Narrow Victory for Summer 2
Stevenage Summer 2 faced off against the Letchworth Cougars in a tight fixture. A single goal was enough to separate the sides, with Stevenage emerging 1–0 winners. Another strong showing in what’s proving to be a solid campaign for the side.
Hitchin Summer League
Wednesday 11th June – Honours Even
In the Hitchin league, Stevenage Hockey Club played out a hard-fought 1–1 draw against a team aptly named Bed by 9. The match saw both teams have their chances, and a point apiece felt like a fair result.
Summary
It’s been a positive week overall for Stevenage’s summer teams:
✅ 2 wins
➖ 1 draw
❌ 1 loss
Plenty of good hockey on display and promising signs as the summer leagues continue. Stay tuned for next week’s roundup and follow each team’s journey as the summer season heats up.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 – 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝-𝐔𝐩

Stevenage Cricket Club experienced a weekend of mixed fortunes, with the 1st XI registering a superb win, while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th XIs all faced tough opposition away from home.

Stevenage 1st XI (pictured) delivered an impressive all-round performance to secure a comprehensive 100-run victory over Radlett 2nd XI, earning the full 30 points in the process.

Batting first, Stevenage posted a strong total of 240 all out in 49.5 overs. Jason Chapman top-scored with a composed 46, while Thomas Liversidge and Scott Davies both chipped in with valuable knocks of 37. Their efforts, alongside several handy partnerships,
ensured Stevenage set a challenging target.

With the ball, Stevenage were ruthless. Mike Philpotts led the attack with figures of 4 for 41, while Karan Anand bowled a superb spell, taking 3 wickets for just a handful of runs in 4.4 overs, which included three maidens. Radlett struggled for momentum and
were bowled out for 140, handing Stevenage a dominant and well-earned victory.

The team are mid table with 4 wins from the 6 games.

The 2nd XI faced a tricky chase away at Mill Hill Village after restricting the hosts to 143. Despite a spirited effort, Stevenage’s batting line-up faltered in the face of tight bowling and helpful conditions. They were dismissed for 99, falling 43 runs short
in a match where runs were at a premium.

The 3rd XI came up against a strong Potters Bar 3rd XI side. Stevenage batted first but were unable to build partnerships, eventually bowled out for 96. Potters Bar made light work of the chase, reaching the target in 22.3 overs for the loss of just three wickets,
sealing a 7-wicket defeat for Stevenage.

The 4th XI travelled to face Harpenden Dolphins 1st XI in a tight, low-scoring contest. Batting first, Stevenage were dismissed for just 75, struggling to gain traction against disciplined bowling. Despite a strong fightback with the ball, Harpenden edged home,
reaching 79 for 5 to claim a 5-wicket win.

Stevenage Phoenix Running Club are excited and proud to share that club member, Simon Lodge has qualified to represent England as an MV55 Masters athlete. Simon came first in his age group at the Green Park Reading 10K earlier this month, with a time of 36:48. This time has now been verified, and he has received official confirmation that he will be representing England at the 2026 International Representative Masters 10k. Simon has a big year of training ahead of him, and Stevenage Phoenix will be cheering him on every step of the way.

Mid Week League race three – Harpenden
On Wednesday 10th June, eight members of Stevenage Phoenix travelled to Harpenden to take part in the third instalment of the Herts MWL with SNHAC, this time hosted by the Harpenden Arrows. Despite her tired legs (from Endure24), Katka, enjoyed the route. “Once you get out of town, it’s two loops starting up the hill so you can feel the legs again and again.” Andy added, “The loop felt like 80% of it was a gradual incline, but the sharper descent was a nice reward. Some nice countryside views and good cake!”

London to Brighton bike ride
From 25 miles at Endure24 last weekend to 54 miles on a bike this weekend, Amy Whitby is on a roll and enjoying the ride. Sunday 15th June saw around 14,000 people ride on closed roads from London’s Clapham Common to Brighton’s seafront, and Amy Whitby was amongst those taking part. Having the event take place on father’s day was a poignant one, as Amy chose to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, in memory of her father, channelling her love and loss into something positive. Reflecting on both Endure24 and L2B, Amy can confirm that Ditchling Beacon is “100 times worse than Heartbreak Hill”. At the time of writing, Amy has raised over £195 for BHF.

Fairlands Valley Spartans are ahead on score and just need one extra race point to secure promotion in the Mid Week League. They are way ahead of all the other clubs in participation but after three out of the four evening races just need that one more competitive point.

Going into the third Mid Week League race the tussle for the vital second place was really tight.

And then on Thursday evening an amazing 77 Spartans, 30 women and 47 men, made the journey to Ware to run and finish in race three.

That meant FVS had three complete women’s teams of eight and three complete men’s teams of twelve finish the multi-terrain and undulating 9.5 kilometre race.

On the night ADRIAN BUSOLINI, sixth overall in 34:21 and SIMON FRASER, seventh overall in 34:30 led in the Spartans with SIMON JACKSON close to top ten at 14th in 34:56. Even the FVS “A” teams twelfth counter, PAUL SHELLEY was well under 40 minutes with 38:53.

They helped the team to second place

In the age group tussles RALPH DADSWELL was second 60 plus in 39:33; BRIAN WHITE first 70 plus in 52:39 and JIM BROWN third 70 plus in 56:18.

There were some high category places for Spartans in the women’s race. OLIVIA LACIGOVA was tenth overall but won the 35 plus category with 43:57; GEORGIE HOOPER was second with 44 minutes exactly. MARIE COLUCCI was second in the 45 plus contest with 46:12. All eight team “A” women squeaked under 54 minutes to put them in third place.

All this means that after three out of the four races Fairlands Valley Spartans are just short of the vital second spot with 33 points compared with Royston’s 34. However the FVS score is 144 so one point in the last races would be enough.

Now look at these Spartan turnouts. Race one in Stevenage 609 runners from divisions two and three – 87 Spartans; Race two in Watford 515 runners from divisions two and three – 62 Spartans; Race three in Ware 385 runners from division two only– 77 Spartans.

16 clubs took part in races one and two and seven in race three so that’s fantastic participation by FVS. More Spartans ran in race three than from any other club.

After three races Fairlands Valley Spartans will not be relegated but it would be great to win that promotion.

The fourth and final counting race will be in Royston on Wednesday evening 25th June.

{All the Spartans finishing race three can be found in tables near the end of this release}.

Prifysgol Abertawe Hanner Marathon

The Swansea Half Marathon was also a representative international masters race and Spartan ASHLEY JOHNSON was running for England. Ashley had a fall during the race but got up and finished in 1 hour 27 minutes 16 seconds (1:27:16).

MARIE COLUCCI also ran the Swansea half marathon. Despite a fuelling error she was pleased with her time of 1.45.40 on tired legs. She said there were beautiful views along the course!

There were 5,730 finishers. Ashley was 295th overall, easily top 10%, and Marie 1,358th.

Ten Times Up Death Hill

Spartan JIM BROWN completed his birthday weekend – and Father’s Day – by running up “Death Hill” ten times. Yes the Finsbury Park Half Marathon consists of nine complete laps but with the lead in and lead out that means runners have to climb what the organisers call death hill ten times.

It was tough and warm. Jim was happy to win his category with 2:06:46 which he noted was almost 24 minutes faster than the age group below him.

Hyrox Harris

John Harris was at the HYROX World Champs in Chicago on Friday 13th June. He qualified to represent England at the World Champs back in April at the Warsaw Hyrox event.

A tough but wonderful occasion and he was so proud to represent his country

Round the King’s House

CRAIG BACON ran the Sandringham 5K on Sunday. this morning. It was on an undulating trail course around the King’s house and back through the woods. He finished in 22:02. The important thing was that he beat his nephew!.

Parkrun Highlights Saturday 14th June.

Spartan SIMON JACKSON won the Stevenage parkrun by a big margin with his 17 minutes 57 seconds in his 70th parkrun.

GRANT RAMSAY was top ten with 19:46.

Other mini-milestones included TOBY ECCLESHALL running his 180th parkrun in 24:06; DARREN EMMERSON his 230th in 25:29 and ANNBALLE WHITE her 180th in 30:32.

LORRAINE HILL was the fastest female from Fairlands in27:26.

Birthday Boy JIM BROWN finished in 28:07 beating the next runner in his category by more than 16 minutes.

Stevenage Striders Running Club have been out tackling sun-soaked trails in Hertfordshire to sizzling road races in Portugal this weekend.

At the Herts Hobble, a scenic and hilly trail event, three Striders took on the challenge with impressive performances.
In the 18-mile route, Kevyn Hopkins-Hall completed his first ever run at this distance in 3 hours 52 minutes, navigating the undulating countryside, encountering goats the size of alpacas, and discovering the surprising fuelling power of rice pudding and tinned peaches.
Helen Moye also finished in 3 hours 52 minutes, praising the scenic views, supportive atmosphere, and well-stocked feed stations. She described it as a “great scenic, undulating, trail run through the countryside,” made all the better by sharing the experience with a fellow Strider.
In the full 26-mile version of the Herts Hobble, Peter Moye powered through the hilly course in 4:20:34, earning an impressive 3rd place finish. With perfect sunshine, tough climbs, and stunning countryside, Peter summed it up in classic fashion: “Lovely sunshine, lots of hills, came 3rd — bish bash bosh!”
Further afield, Helder Soares represented the club at the Reguengos de Monsaraz 9.5km race in Portugal. On a hot day and tough course, Helder ran a strong 37:11, placing 22nd overall and taking 2nd place in the MV60 category.

Our running clubs had a very hot and busy weekend!

Fairlands Valley Spartans It was seriously hot for the Greenway Challenge in Letchworth. Several of the 17 Spartans grouped up in the sun as they tackled the 13.1 miles multi-terrain event.

Spartan ADRIAN DONNELLY was a bit of a star. He won the men 40 plus category and was fifth overall with 1 hour 38 minutes 41 seconds (1:38:41). NICK GILL and PETE GENTLE came in 36th and 37th in 1:52:59. SUZY HAWKINS was the fastest female from Fairlands in 1:53:59 with TOBY ECCLESHALL not far behind in 1:54:17.

Next came a Spartan quadruplet. ANNABELLE WHITE and ALEX SCOFIELD in 2:08:06 then MARIE COLUCCI and GEORGIE HOOPER in 2:08:17.

FVS club chair TIM ROBINSON was back in 2:43:39 a little in front of another Spartan pair TRICIA HOPPER in 2:45:01 and KAREN LIDDLE in 2:45:04.

A famous Fairlands Five rounded it off for FVS. VICKY ARCHER 126th in 2:51:16 then CLAIRE EMMERSON 127th; HAZEL SMITH 128th; TRACY PEZ 129th and PENNY SCHENKEL 130th all in 2:51:17.

There were 145 finishers.

Five Miles Frazzle but some Spartans top threes.

Some like it hot. Others were not quite so sure at the Phoenix Five mile race in Stevenage. Thirteen Spartans ran. Pretty warm with little shade but a straightforward course from Shephalbury Park to Fairlands Valley Park and back.

MIKE JEFFS and PAUL SHELLEY excelled. Mike was first man 40 plus and fourth out of the 272 finishers in 29 minutes 55 seconds; Paul second man 50 plus and seventh in 31:06.

JESS CLARKE was second senior woman (18-39) and tenth woman overall in 40:44 and LORRAINE HILL third woman 55 plus in 43 minutes exactly.

Lots of room for improvement but JIM BROWN completed a full set of both club championships for this year with 46:20.

{All the Spartan times for the Greenway Challenge and the Phoenix Five can be found in tables near the end of this release}.

Spartans On Track

Fairlands Valley Spartan sent a team of nineteen to the first fixture in the EMAC track and field series this year.

The next two EMAC fixtures will be in Bedford on Wednesday 4th June and in Corby on Wednesday 2nd July. EMAC, Eastern Masters Athletics Club, is for East of England veterans aged 35 plus.

Semington Slog 10K

PETE COOK said the Semington Slog 10K was a lovely sunny outing in the Wiltshire Countryside undulating to start with then a nice flat path along the Kennet and Avon Canal followed by the reason it's called a slog for the last 5K. He took more than a minute off his personal best (PB) when he finished in 56:35.

Marlow Five

NIKKI NATION ran the Marlow Five in 52 minutes 33 seconds.

MK Marathon Weekend

At about 12 degrees conditions were relatively kind for marathon running in Milton Keynes on May Day Holiday Monday.

A bit of a breeze but TONY RANDFIELD went through 10K in 49:40 and half marathon in 1:45:51 and reached the finish line in 3 hours 45 minutes 29 seconds. JESSICA CLARKE was through 10K in 1:00:12 and halfway in 2:06:51 and the finish line in 4:34:33. With a much better run than in Brighton a few weeks ago HANNAH MANTON in was at 10K in 1:23:45; halfway in 2:41:19 and finished in 5:27:05. There were 1,934 finishers.

Hannah said “It didn't quite go to plan despite feeling strong, blisters definitely got the better of me! Multiple stops were needed to change plasters, and even swap trainers at the halfway point, but I'll take it as lessons learned and more training towards my ultra in June!”

JOHN NELMS was running the half marathon. He went through 10K in 1:02:45 and finished in 2:02:15. There were 2,316 finishers in the half marathon.

Parkrun Highlights Saturday 10th May – including the 400th parkrun in Stevehnsger

Stevenage parkrun celebrated a major milestone on Saturday morning 10th May. It was be the 400th Stevenage parkrun. So far there have been 132,505 finishes in just under nine years with an average time of 30 minutes 11 seconds.

There was another huge turnout – 653 runners – and 30 of them were Spartans.

Spartan ADRIAN BUSOLINI won the event by a good margin. He ran the 5K in 17 minutes 52 seconds (17:52). That was 54 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

GRANT RAMSAY was back in the top five at fourth with 19:15.

Stevenage Phoenix Running Club hosted the Phoenix 5, which is organised by the club and raises money for chosen charities.

HYROX London
On Monday 5th May, Jodie Kantas took part in HYROX Women’s Doubles in London’s Olympia, with friend Stacey Miles. The event was an enjoyable one but also highlighted to Jodie the importance of strength training for runners. Jodie remarked that “I will definitely keep up the training as I think it is massively helping me in the long term with my running”. HYROX involves running 8 x 1km laps with a strength exercise in between each lap. Exercises include 1000m ski erg, 100m sand bag lunges and 200m farmers carry. Jodie and Stacey completed the event in 01:29:37.

Silverstone Grand Prix 10k
The race is one and half laps of the full Grand Prix Circuit starting on the Wellington Straight and finishing in the pitlane. The smooth tarmac and almost flat course mean that there is real PB potential. On Tuesday 6th May, Bobby Buckley and James Woodcock took part in the race for the second year running and recommends the “great flat circuit round the inconic race track”. James was pleasantly surprised to earn a 5K PB.

The Phoenix 5
On Sunday 11th May, the big day finally arrived, and boy did it deliver. Although this was our second year running the event, a few members of the committee were involved for the first time. The feedback we had on the day was overwhelmingly positive and we hope that everyone enjoyed the day as much as we did. We had 70+ volunteers working hard to make the magic happen, and 272 runners out on the course. Not to mention the dozens of enthusiastic children who ran the mini mile around Shephalbury Park. We’re still totting up the official numbers but we believe we’ve raised over £1000 for our four chosen charities: Knebworth Food Bank, Garden House Hospice Care, Feed Up Warm Up and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. So a huge thank you to everyone who entered, bought cakes, sponsored the race or came and volunteered on the day.
In addition to our volunteers we also had 11 Phoenixes out on the course, who all ran brilliantly. In third place was Simon Lodge who also nabbed the highest age grade of the race (for the second week in a row) and broke his own MV50 club record. Alex Wasley wasn’t far behind him in 8th place, also breaking the club record, in the MS age category. A special mention to David Poulter who did a fantastic job at being the tail runner and ensuring everyone got home safely, whilst dressed as a phoenix of course. Full results below.
Simon Lodge 29:45 – course best and SB
Alex Wasley 31:13 – course best and PB
Aaron Reynolds (ran for SNHAC) 34:20 – course best and SB
Shaun Pinner 35:30 - PB
Neal Crawley 41:05
Rob Warren 41:23
Greg Lasenby 41:29
Martin Wasley 49:19
Dan Curtain 51:38
Chloe Fox 56:55
David Poulter 1:18:07

Sarah Goodyear battled through the heat to finish in 1:04:03, pleased to have kept running throughout.
Carmien Gharbaoui made her debut over the distance in 1:02:44, earning a PB, Course Best, and First-time finish at 5 miles, running a well-managed “jeffing” strategy.
Paula Heyes rounded off the Marlow crew with a strong 1:03:58, calling the support “the best from the Marshals, the locals and of course the Striders!”
🦅 Stevenage Phoenix 5 – 11th May

Vicky Phillips returned to form after a marathon slump, finishing in 51:32 and feeling great.
Rhian Bethell stood out with a string of accomplishments: PB, Season’s Best, Course Best, and her first time at the distance – all in 46:50.
Richard Longley executed a smart race strategy to secure a PB in 42:17, his third race at the distance.
🌍 Europe’s Toughest Infinity – 10th May
Strider Adam Hough took on this punishing 12-hour ultra endurance challenge, completing 51.66km over a mix of 15k and 5k loops in 9 hours. It was his first marathon and ultra marathon – a tremendous achievement under tough conditions. “My body was in pieces,” he said, “but it was absolutely worth it.”

🌿 Greenway Challenge – 11th May
Matt Robinson took a relaxed approach to the 12-mile Greenway Challenge, completing the scenic Letchworth route in 1:40:39. He appreciated the low-key vibe and the post-run cake selection – a true Strider priority!

Those Damn Crows recently landed a UK Top 40 #3 hit with album ‘Inhale / Exhale’. The Swansea rockers will know exactly how to get the Stevenage crowd jumping. Punk-infused alt-rockers Snayx also support and will bring all the fired-up energy required.
On Saturday 24th May it’s a huge treat for the pop/dance fanatics as Ella Henderson headlines. With over a billion UK streams, UK album and single #1’s to her name, as well as a string of top 10 smash hits, including collabs with Jax Jones, Sigala, David Guetta, Joel Corry, Tom Grennan, Nathan Dawe, Rudimental and more, Ella Henderson is pop royalty. Saturday in Stevenage is going to go off!
Platinum-selling artist JP Cooper also lines up and will wow the crowds with hits like ‘Perfect Strangers’ and ‘September Song’ as he shows off his incredible vocal range and stage presence. Sigala steps up to get the crowds bouncing with his uplifting dance grooves. The talented producer has collaborated with Ella Henderson and JP Cooper, also scoring top 10 hits with Ella Eyre, Paloma Faith, Becky Hill, Craig David and more. Rising star Eirra will also perform, playing the catchy indie pop that has her tipped for big things.
Sunday 25th May sees a bonafide indie legend take to the stage as Richard Ashcroft headlines. As The Verve frontman, he wrote seminal tunes like ‘Bittersweet Symphony’, and ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ and was described as a ‘genius’ by Noel Gallagher. Ashcroft scaled the heights again as a solo artist with 6 UK top 3 albums and hits like ‘A Song For The Lovers’ and ‘Break The Night With Colour’. SMR 25 is a rare chance to see one of the most influential names in indie rock perform and should not be missed.
In support, more massive bands hit the Lamex Stadium stage. The Zutons are best known as the original writers of the classic, ‘Valerie’ but the Liverpool favourites and accomplished live performers have 4 Top 10 albums, including last year’s smash, ‘The Big Decider’. Another big name, The Futureheads, appear on Sunday. Their cover of ‘Hounds Of Love’ hit #8 and was NME’s Single of the Year, leading them to a host of hit records and performances around the world. Local indie rockers Optimist will kick things off playing big tracks from their recent debut album ‘Full Circle’. Sunday in Stevenage will see anthems sung at top volume throughout the night.
Music lovers will flock to The Lamex Stadium this late May Bank Holiday as SMR 25 brings a host of superstars to Hertfordshire for one of this summer’s biggest weekends of live music.
