THE SPIRIT TOUCHED MY FOREHEAD…

…and I found myself sitting outside my cabin at a table that hadn’t been there before, dumbstruck by the sight of him now wearing a colourful shirt, knee-length grey shorts, white socks and sandals. He couldn’t possibly look less like a spirit guide. He then produced a packet of Woodbines and took out the small picture card inside.
“Ah good, I haven’t got this one. Look, it’s Kate Tyrrell. Irish girl. Captained the Denbighshire Lass. Would you like one?” He offered the pack to me. “Of course, we can’t actually taste them. But old habits die hard, eh?”
He was right about the taste, which was just as well.

I REACHED A BARRIER…

…of thick, tangled brambles, thorns pointing at me menacingly. But frontiers have never bothered me so I began to search for a weak point until I was met by a huge shadow. It spoke.
“You can’t go through. You don’t have permission.” The figure was almost transparent but clearly very muscular beneath its grey robe. At least, I noticed instinctively, it wasn’t armed.
“How do I get, um, permission?”
“You don’t. Go back, Miss.”
I smiled at him and headed off until I found a gap through… and of course walked straight into the same huge guard.
“You can’t go through. You don’t––”
What’s the worst that could happen? I carried on walking, passing right through him, and found myself on the other side.

I LEFT THE CABIN…

…and found a narrow track that led steeply up the mountain through dense woodland, with the overwhelming sense that I was revisiting somewhere within myself. There was silence, save for the rustling of small memories that came to stare at me, some smiling, others accusingly.
A black, silky butterfly flew a little way ahead. It led me down to smooth, black stones beside the silent, unmoving waters of a lake. And for the first time, I now felt very, very alone.
