In conversations with other agents and players last summer, Telegraph Sport understands, it was made clear by Arsenal’s most powerful executives that Bukayo Saka is the club’s “franchise player”.

Such a term is more commonly used in sports in the United States, but it undoubtedly applies to Saka at Arsenal: not only is the 24-year-old the star player on the pitch, he is also the most prominent face of the Arsenal brand. Of all Mikel Arteta’s players, Saka is the one with the deepest connection to the club, and indeed to the supporters.

Antoine Semenyo’s move from Bournemouth to Manchester City, which was formally announced on Friday morning, represents the most spectacular development yet in the career of a player who once quit football altogether.

Not so long ago, Semenyo was battling in the lower leagues for Bath City and Newport County. Now he is a £62.5m footballer, playing for probably the greatest manager in the game’s modern history.

Sam Dean looks at the qualities that make Semenyo so highly rated ⬇️

It may have been a storm in a coffee cup on the south coast for Thomas Frank, but there is a very real threat to his authority brewing at Tottenham Hotspur.

Less than 24 hours after being caught sipping from an Arsenal-branded cup during Tottenham’s stoppage-time defeat at Bournemouth, Frank had to sit in front of a red and white Emirates-branded background to answer questions about his captain Cristian Romero.

The FA Cup backdrop provided Arsenal fans, who have flooded social media with a host of Frank-inspired jokes in response to the coffee cup storm, with another chance to poke fun at him. But there is not much for Tottenham’s head coach to smile about, as he attempts to retain some sense of control.

Michel Nkuka Mboladinga has become one of the unexpected stars of the tournament because of his striking impression of assassinated independence hero Patrice Lumumba.

Nkuka Mboladinga stands completely still during matches, with his right arm raised, as he poses as a statue of Lumumba. Lumumba was the first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and leader of the Congolese National Movement from 1958 until his death in 1961.

DR Congo were defeated by Algeria, who scored a dramatic 119th-minute winner, in the last 16 of the tournament in Morocco on Tuesday.

During the celebrations of his team’s victory, Algeria forward Mohamed Amoura mocked Nkuka Mboladinga by facing the statuesque supporter in the stands, raising his hand in imitation and then dropping to the ground.

Accusations of voodoo, juju, magic or witchcraft are nothing new in African football, although most fall into the category of rumour.

Salt thrown in front of the team bus before it enters the stadium, only walking on to the pitch backwards and camping trips in graveyards for entire teams the night before a match.

All apparently good luck.
