Planetmagazine CylchgrawnPlanet Planet: the Welsh Internationalist was a magazine offering a radical, independent approach to Wales and the world, published from 1970, defunded 2024.

Now collaborating on events etc. with aim of keeping flag flying for the magazine & eventual relaunch... Planet: the Welsh Internationalist is an English-language magazine which has been offering a radical, independent approach to Wales and the world since 1970. We also have a website offering myriad multimedia material and extra articles (www.planetmagazine.org.uk). Planet plays a key part in Wel

sh cultural and political life, and has three core roles which make it unique: Firstly, bringing together writing on Wales and the rest of the world; secondly bridging English and Welsh-speaking Welsh culture; and thirdly gathering together subjects as diverse as politics, the arts, literature, popular culture and the environment. Every issue contains fiction, poetry and an extensive book review section of the latest titles from Wales. Planet has brought the words of ground-breaking figures such as Raymond Williams, RS Thomas, George Monbiot, Chinua Achebe, Shani Rhys-James, and recently, Menna Elfyn, Jan Morris, Robert Minhinnick, Peter Lord, Tony Conran and Rachel Trezise to a new and diverse readership. Every issue also features emerging writers and artists you are likely never to have heard of. Mae croeso i chi ohebu â ni yn y Gymraeg. https://linktr.ee/planetmagazine

What others have said about Planet:

'Time and again the magazine has taken me upwards and outwards from the fulcrum of Wales to the furthest reaches of discussion and discovery.' - Jan Morris

'Without Planet, our world would be not only smaller and more inward-looking but also impoverished in creativity and intellectual expression.' - Menna Elfyn

'A must-read for anyone who's serious about discussing the big issues that face us as a nation' - Huw Edwards

'I was proud to win the Planet Young Essay Writers award last year with a piece that I felt passionately about' - Siôn Tomos Owen

'Planet's plain-speaking political radicalism brings insight but also courage for a difficult road' - Stevie Davies

'I've learned so much from Planet over the years about the organic connection between culture, politics and democracy.' - Francesca Rhydderch

Owen Donovan, blogger at oggy bloggy ogwr

'Planet supplies a vital space for in-depth coverage and discussion of culture and politics, managing to balance its focus on Wales with a commitment to representing Wales in the wider world.' - Rhian E. Heartbreaking to see so many brilliant Welsh publishers suffering from a dysfunctional, negligent, neoliberal funding system, dominated by individuals who are utterly out of touch with the realities of living on a low and precarious wage. There is so much unfulfilled potential within the sector, a sector which can only ultimately be transformed through change led by those with on-the-ground experience as publishing/media workers, supported by those within the relevant spheres of influence with progressive principles and track record. Sending our solidarity to Jannat and her colleagues - support Lucent Dreaming through reading Jannat's article and purchasing their books!

A very thought-provoking discussion on the importance for Wales of a culture of robust critique, and of how financial precarity and austerity leads to the prioritisation of reputation management over all else.

Grateful for the mention of Planet's situation too!

When a bad review becomes news, it’s not about the art - it’s about a nation that’s mistaken conformity for care.

Just wanted to give a shout out to the loyal Planet subscribers plus the wonderful Parthian Books who are helping Planet store its stock and documents in our 'dormancy'.

The last decade or so has been so tough for everyone in Welsh magazine and book publishing, but the networks of support and solidarity between publishers and with authors and readers have only got stronger... Diolch yn fawr.

What connects this exquisite Planet cover, Ani Glass & Y Cwps in Aberystwyth?

Lynn Carter, mother of Ani Glass and Gwenno, won a Planet cover art competition in 1971 with this beautiful illustration weaving together Welsh zoomorphic imagery as you might find in monastic manuscripts with motifs relating to contemporary Welsh culture and resistance.

It even has a tiny cameo in the video for Ani's recently released, stunning track 'Phantasmagoria'... https://nation.cymru/feature/ani-glass-discusses-new-album-phantasmagoria/

Ani will be playing Y Cwps this Friday, also the venue for our Planet events, which keep the flag flying for the magazine in our dormancy. Get your tickets for Ani's gig here, with support from the brilliant Tai Haf Heb Drigolyn! https://theatrfelinfach.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/873657046

Still processing ideas generated from Saturday's Planet event at Y Cwps. A very morale-boosting gathering for dark times.

It really did felt like an issue of the magazine come alive, complete with 'Letters to the editor' (aka a very stimulating audience Q & A).

Huge thanks to our panellists Leanne Wood, Mike Parker, Maithreyi Karnoor, Huw Williams & Gareth Llyr Evans, plus our musician Owen Shiers of Cynefin for a diverse evening spanning grassroots community empowerment, post-apocalyptic poetry & prose, memoir from the margins, inter-generational dialogue between grandfather & grandson, a call for a new direction for Welsh theatre and folk song from Ceredigion's living communal tradition.

No theme was planned or anticipated in advance, but on the night the spirit that emerged serendipitously was resolutely anti-fascist!

In the absence of a visual arts presentation, the next best thing was a last-minute homage to the Welsh Lady imagery of some of our favourite Welsh artists, such as Ruth Jen, Seren Morgan Jones, Meinir Mathias & Kathryn Campbell Dodd via the Rebecca Riots & more recent activism. Her charity bucket raised £129 for 3 brilliant international and local causes.

Keep an eye out for more Planet events in the future.

*Planet event at Y Cŵps 6 September 2025*

Introducing our speakers: next up – Gareth Llŷr Evans!

Gareth (he/him) is a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, Aberystwyth University. Since 2018, he has been a theatre critic for The Guardian, predominantly reviewing performances in Wales but also in England and internationally.

Gareth has a particularly incisive perspective on cultural/political developments and their ramifications within Welsh theatre in both languages.

His work offering an ethical dimension on arts commentary aligns particularly well with Planet’s ethos, which brought politics, arts and social justice issues together seamlessly over the decades.

For tickets see https://tinyurl.com/dykrspr5 Advance & door tickets £10. Concessions £8 (use code CONC at checkout).

*Planet event at Y Cŵps 6 September*
Introducing our musician – Owen Shiers (Cynefin)!

The Cynefin project is the brainchild of Owen Shiers. Owen aims to give voice to Ceredigion's rich heritage. Starting Capel Dewi in the Clettwr Valley, where he has his roots, Owen has uncovered old stories, poems & songs, breathing new life into them.

Cynefin received three nominations at the 2023 Welsh Folk Awards. The new album 'Shimli', gives a unique insight into the oral culture of the past, while discussing the contemporary challenges facing the countryside, raising questions around our modern disorders of disconnection & uprootedness.

‘A quietly political antidote to the modern age’ The Guardian – Folk Album of the Month.

Find out more here https://cynefinmusic.wales/en/home-page

Planet readers may remember Owen’s stunning performance at our 50th anniversary party, and & his thought-provoking reflection on the contemporary resonance of the term ‘cynefin’, beyond current buzzwords, in our Welsh Keywords series (Planet 249).

Connect with Planet’s Ceredigion roots – & also one of its core values of bridging the language cultures of Wales – & come along!

Yn cyflwyno ein cerddor – Owen Shiers (Cynefin)!

Prosiect Owen Shiers yw'r prosiect Cynefin. Mae'n gais i roi llais i dreftadaeth gyfoethog Ceredigion sydd eisoes wedi mynd yn angof. Wrth gychwyn yng Nghapel Dewi yn Nyffryn Clettwr, sef bro ei mebyd, a theithio'r trwy'r tirlun cerddorol lleol mae Owen wedi dadorchuddio hen straeon, cerddi a chaneuon, ac wedi rhoi bywyd newydd iddynt yn y presennol.

Derbyniodd Cynefin tri enwebiad yng Ngwobrau Gwerin Cymru 2023, ac mae'r prosiect yn rhoi llwyfan i Owen i drin ei sgiliau cyfeilio wrth ddychwelyd yn ôl i'w gwreiddiau. Mae'r albwm newydd 'Shimli', yn rhoi cipolwg unigryw ar ddiwylliant llafar ac arferion y gorffennol, wrth hefyd trafod yr heriau cyfoes sy'n gwynebu cefn gwlad a chodi cwestiynau o gylch ein hanhwylder modern o ddatgysylltu a diwreiddio.
